The First Allstar Teams

I noticed in Danny's bio that he coached the 1st allstar team in the nation. Who did they compete against back then? HS? Rec teams? Was it hard to get into those competitions as an allstar team? Who are some of the other allstar teams that were established way back in the beginning? (whether they are still in existance or not)

To be fair....there were other Independent (non-school exhibition) teams that pre date the team that I coached but we forced the issue of competition.  The team I coached in 1985 was the Clayton Valley All Stars. Led by Kathy Gaffney and Diane Ahern, they entered the JV school division at NCA Nationals for 3 years in a row.  After numerous complaints that they weren't a "school team" NCA decided to create the All Star division in 1987.  Back then there was one single division, 17 teams competed, we got third. :(  The Gulf Breeze All stars from Florida were the winners that year.  The Orlando Stars placed 2nd.

It's all come a LONG way since then.  Fun to look back on.

I believe the teams listed below have had the biggest impact on the development of All Star cheerleading.  The year listed is roughly when that impact began.

Orlando Stars, Orlando, FL- 1987
Cheers Inc., Lexington, KY - 1990
Pro Cheer Kansas City, KS - 1993
Charlotte All-Stars, Matthews, NC - 1994
Gym Tyme, Louisville, KY - 1996
Cheer Athletics, Dallas, TX - 1997
Powerhouse Open, TX - 1997ish, anyone have video of this team?  I think they revolutionized cheerleading at that time.
Champion Cheer Outlaws, San Diego, CA - 1997
Spirit of Texas - 1998
Top Gun, Miami, FL - 1999
World Cup, Freehold, NJ - 2000
Extreme Cheer, Lubbock, TX - 2001
Georgia All-Stars, Marietta, GA - 2001
Maryland Twisters, Glen Burnie, MD - 2003

Danny - You neglect to mention the immense impact that Cheergyms.com has had on the All Star world...you modest man!  Without a doubt, Cheergyms.com is the place to go when you have any questions about how to make your gym and teams more successful.  Whenever I have had questions or ideas, I always know that "when in doubt" - ask Morton or Danny!  And I can't even begin to describe how Cheergyms.com teams have set the bar for everyone else.

No brown nosing here...just wanted you & yours to know how much you are appreciated by so many!

Two brief mentions

1. Cheers, Inc. became Kentucky Elite in 1997.
2. Kentucky Elite Showcats: the first All Star special needs team started 2001

Great list!  Charlotte would have been 1991 though.  I was clueless then but I know the cheer says 17th season.  Thanks!

I would like to know about all the Northern California Gyms.  When they were started, by whom and why.  When did power open their doors, where did they start at and how many cheerleaders did they have.  I have noticed cheerleading and allstars has grown so much.  I remember when they only had Novice and Advanced or just one level per division.  I like the multiple levels offered now it makes it so fair for everyone and gives all the cheerleaders a chance to compete and win and not just those that are level 5.

I believe that is the true intention of the levels we have today.  Unfortunately you can have a situation where those at level 5 also compete on a lower level team, which defeats the purpose.  Personally I will root for them at the higher level, but never at the lower; you can't have it both ways, I'm sorry.   If this is the direction our sport is moving towards, I miss and long for the old days.

I have heard of all of those except Powerhouse.  I was even living in Texas at the time.
