well i only live about 5-10 minutes away from the gym so its not that bad
We drive about 45 minutes to Motions (if traffic is good) It takes just under two hours to get to AA practice @ Pyramids, but that is only twice a month...
I posted earlier but I think my post was too far at the bottom of the page because I didn't get a response. Sorry in advance for the repost.
I'm really curious to know if any of you who commute long distances to your gym of preferrence do so no matter which level team your kids are on (2, 3, or 4 / mini, youth, etc.) or just for levels 5 (youth, junior /senior) or above? I, myself, am weighing some options so your input is greatly appreciated.
When my daughter cheered she wasn't on level 5 and I would've driven up to an hour and half (the same as I would if she were) to a gym that we felt good about. Being in the bay area, I don't think that miles are what should count but time driving. ;)
I live less than 5 miles from California All Stars, but I know we have girls and guys that commute from Bakersfield and Fresno for practice on Sundays.

My daughter, a 6 year old youth cheerleader, is not a level 5 cheerleader cheerleader. This season we moved from a gym that was 10 minutes from my house (5 minutes outside of traffic) to a gym where we travel 30 - 45 minutes each way (depending on traffic). I did so because the gym she was at did not have (and would not have) the next level team to challenge her. Also, the gym she was at did not have strong junior and senior program for her to grow into and look up to.
My goals for her (she is very young) was to place her in a gym where (1) she continues her love for cheer by having fun, (2) she is taught things correctly and, (3) she has room for advancement with teams she can look up to.
I do not push her to cheer - she loves it. However, if I am going to pay for this sport (which has been discussed in other places), I am going to make sure her growth continues. In the end, with everything she has learned in the first half of the season, the communte (while it has been stressful at times - and NOTHING like some others) does not bother me at all. Her smile is worth every minute I send in traffic ...
We really wanted to join Pyramids, but I just could not handle the commute. I work full time and spend 3 hours a day just going back and forth to work. The idea of getting back in the car traveling another hour just to get her to practice, then another hour for the trip back home was more then I was willing to do. I love her and support her love of cheerleading, but I know my limits I just wish Pyramids was a little closer. Hey I know that you have been in the same building for quite a few years. Have you thought about relocating to a bigger faciility like say closer to the 580/680 interchange :)

Wow! Bakersfield and Fresno? Really? That's incredible! California is actually the gym that I was considering commuting to. Its an hour and 10 to an hour and 15 minutes away from where we live during normal commuter traffic hours. I noticed you said those commuting from up north practice on Sundays, only once a week which, if a person really LOVES cheer (and clearly they do) then it's worth the drive. My daughter also loves cheer. I believe commutes are worth it when, as mentioned in the post above, its done for the love of the sport, proper training, and when planning for future growth. I was worried that I was going crazy because I always questioned others who would commute 45 mins, an hour, even an hour and a half. But now that my daughter has gotten older, all of a sudden its worth it to me to commute. I'll let you know how it goes and thanks so much for sharing. This has made the decision a great deal easier.

Cal Spirit, an affiliate of Cheergyms.com , is located fairly close to the 580/680 interchange and they have an awesome facility and great coaches!
Hey well I am not a parent or athlete, but I coach at California Spirit and drive an hour each way from Vacaville. It is exhausting and time consuming, but I love my kids so I think about that everyday as im driving. Music and cell phones help too
Y'alls commute is easy...mine is a 1 1/2 hour flight then about 45 min drive to the gym.......it would be about an 8 hour drive from my house, so I fly to practice.
WOW! You are extremely devoted to your team! But doesn't the air fair alone cost a ton of money? Either way, Kudos to you! Thats truly amazing. What gym are you flying to & from?

To you and all the others that jump through hoops so your child can cheer, you are great moms/dads. bizeecheermom, all I can say is WOW!

Now that's commitment! I applaud you for teaching your daughter what true dedication is all about. There are times when I question what the heck I'm doing - trecking all over the state "just for cheer," as my husband used to say. LOL This is all so expensive, its time consuming and now we're commuting...yikes! But - and that's a huge BUT, it is so worth it. Thank goodness my husband recognizes the positives as well these days. You can't replace the memories of the girls competing/bonding/heck bonding with us parents. It teaches the kids discipline and keeps them physically fit. They make great friends and meet other kids from both the local area all over the country (if you're fortunate enough to go to Worlds then they even meet people from other regions of the world). For me there's nothing like the exhiliration of seeing the many levels of talent at the competitions. I THRIVE ON THAT! And last but not least - I have made some irreplacement friends myself. In the end - this is priceless!
P.S. Message Board parents are a tremendous help as well because it reminds us that we're not alone in our quest to guide our kids, teach them life lessons, have fun ourselves, and stay afloat on that financial boat. LOL

oops...I meant that I've made some "irreplaceable friends." You all know what I meant. LOL
