Now, they are being bashed because they have a fantastic opportunity to become a 2008 National champs and still challenging their girls every step of the way. All because the competitive pool is small, which I might add, is totally out of their control. I really feel for UCF.
If the rule of the OPEN team is removed next season, UCF is going to be far more ready at the 4 level than any other team. They will have built the confidence at level 4 and have the experience to perform at that level.
I think every gym gets bashed on here at some point or another, so I refuse to buy into the POOR UCF. Poor all of us, this is the world off all star cheer, welcome to it and know that if you wer going to do things that are "out of the norm" - 8 year olds on a Sr.4, going to comps with no competition, whatever the case may be - then folks are going to talk about you. THIS IS LIFE.
The majority of these posts are coming from members of the UCF gym. How about they try to handle these issues internally and then it won't look like EVERYONE is bashing UCF, which is simply not true. Personally I agree with their concerns, I really hate it when my daughter has no competition, and please spare me the bit about how competition fees are not just paying for the competitions; I'm paying for my daughter to compete, not simply perform. But this is a general issue, not specific to one particular gym.
Okay (my opinion) open division, any division (and someone may have already said this but, if there is no competition in the level you put your team in move them up a level!! Yes I said up!!!
I would rather see where I placed against the big dogs, than stand on stage a celebrate for whiping on a lower division. Some of these teams may get a pleasent suprise!!! I think most parents would prefer it that way, (am I wrong?)
Well I guess some people just want a national title no matter how they get it. They won't have any competition but they will have an easier time placing well and they can still call themselves National Champions!!! Great season!
You know what this is a great debate, and we've had this many a times and it will continue - probably forever as long as there is cheer. The thing is, these younger girls have worked their butts off, and not only UCF has them on their Sr.4 OPEN team and everyone knows it. I see it on everyones teams! So lets not blow smoke up anyones rear here. And you darn well know you care more about making your childrens happiness than the competitors they go up against. If you daughter is not against anyone, be happy they are going home with something and it just gave you bragging rights. And you know what.. maybe also you can think of it as, no one is good enough to compete with them. Would you honestly rather them be put on a youth or junior team where thier skills would be of limited use and where they might even lose thier tumbling skills? Would you honestly lower the level from a 4 to a 3 of team and limit them as well? and this is not fair to all the other competitors that are a true level 3. You want to sweep them in a division that you aren't supposed to be in? Or put them on a sr. team where they will incorporate all of their skills? You know if the tiny 8-10 yr old is your daughter you'ld be darn proud. So everyone give it up, this is a losing battle. I think UCF is being completely fair for their girls and for other competitors.
Examples of what's not fair.. Power Mini lvl 2 - should be Yth lvl 2 (and yes they've already competed in this division)
At our first comp our Mini 2 did compete in the Youth 2 division because there was no other team in the Mini 2 division. They are a true Mini 2 team and at the last competition competed in that division. Hope this clears that up.
I could be wrong but I think that it the was Power mini 1 who compeated in the youth lv 1. Power mini 2 (from the results posted) only has compeated as a mini lv 2

I think the problem is you don't see as much crap in other sports. yes there is bashing, but about real issues not because you think someone should be in a particular division or not. What difference does it make. Is that going to make your child get a tuck or not. Will it make the team compete better or not? Does it increase that teams' skill set overall? No!

Exactly my point, parents cause so much trouble. This sport is about the kids, regardless if you are paying for it or fundraising. You are there to support the program and the decisions it makes unless it NEGATIVELY influences your child. I doubt being in senior 3 versus senior open 3 is going to make your child upset.

good comment. it doesn't matter to the child what division they are in. It comes down to the parents. IF you are walking away from a competition telling your cheerleader that they were in the wrong division or their team wasn't challenging due to lack of competition, then the cheerleader is alerted to the situation. However, I have never seen a parent ask a cheerleader to throw away a national jacket, trophy, or medal, because they felt it wasn't deserving. Parents make reality for the cheerleaders.
Parents need to be the role models here. Self-esteem is everything in a child's life. If a child has a positive supporting unit, your child will sucess, not just in cheer, in life, in general.
My 8 year old does not know how many teams she competes against and I do not show her the schedule unless she askes for it. She does ask how the entire team does after a performance since she can't see every stunt and tumling pass. Kids are all so different!!
Good points however my eight year old has walked away from competitions upset that they didn't have any competiton.
If this is the case, it is important that you set some personal goals for your eight year old. I don't know one eight year old that has performed perfectly at every competition.
Every cheerleader can be tighter on their motions, dance with more pizazz, work on their jumps, and even make sure their teammates succeed.
There are personal goals that need to be established all along the way. Parents can set these goals for their cheerleaders.

How does that work? I thought to compete Mini you couldn't be over a certain age Or you went up a division even though your age is mini? I'm confused.
So, if you have a Mini team, they could compete in the Youth division because they are all under the age of 11. Sounds like Power decided to move them to the Youth for 1 competition so they could compete against another team.

You are totally right.
I can't agree more!!! I applaud their courage! It's gotta be tough having to be watch by everyone. I wouldn't want their jobs. Keep it going! Y'all are doing great.
Since Open is 18 years and younger, anyone can go into this category, correct? Even if you don't have members younger than 10. It's an opportunity for anyone who wants the chance at a National Championship title by going against less teams. Might as well take advantage of it before it goes away.

It's time you get over this. Good luck to all the teams competing in the open division this year.
