I don't really like all the glitter. I've watched alot of the videos of the big named gyms and alot of those teams don't use it and it does not seem to hurt them any.
Everyone wants All Star Cheer to be looked at as a sport. They need to do away with all the fluff like overly curled hair and faces dipped in glitter. Yes appearance is important but times have changed and the general perception of cheerleaders needs to change for it to be taken seriously.
I agree. The perception of cheerleading is rah rah and pom poms. I don't think alot of people are even aware of what goes into competitive cheerleading. Over doing the hair and makeup only adds to that misconception. I would like for people to see it for the sport it is.
Do people even wear that anymore. Successful programs do not need that fluff. Does anyone wear it. I know Cheergyms and Power don't and I would consider them the best of the best of Norcal.

Really? I just looked at Power's website photos, and they are all made-up just as much as the rest of the teams I've seen. I'm not sure specifically about glitter, but they have shiny silver eyelids and bright red lips.

To say successful programs do not need that fluff is really besides the point. No one needs anything to look good, but what you need and want are 2 totally different issues. That is why uniforms change every year, and so does hair. Teams want different looks to stand out. Its a personal preferance. I personally love the glitter it stands out.

Not that it really matter at all, but Power does not wear the "glitter makeup". It is a specific type of makieup with glitter in it. However, yes they do wear makup. I love that this website people fight about glitter.
Thats funny POWER doesn't wear glitter they wear MAC and it is shiny and looks like it has glitter, but it doesn't. The combination of colors they wear make it look like that.

Glitter makeup do you think it adds to your scores for appearance. Do you love it or hate it.
I don't know about adding to the scores (any judges out there?), but personally, I wish we could do away with the over-the-top makeup. I think that what it does is make it look less like a sport and more like a dance performance (where make-up puts you in character). If we want cheer to become more accepted as a sport, I think a practical clean-faced, ponytailed, sporty-look (think gymnastics, basketball, or tennis) is more appropriate.
I think what looks odd to me is that the girls have actual glitter on their lips and it looks like they have red sand on their face. It then is all over their face. Also, it gets in the girls eye. I was at the Jamz comp and there was a girl from a team crying because she had the glitter in her eyes and could not get it out.

Exactly, if girls are to be considered hard-working, sweating (lol) athletes, glitter and bright lipstick is a detriment to that perception. As in "wow, that must not be very difficult, since her lipstick and makeup is staying on so perfectly and her hair is is all coiffed and perfect!" I say let them show how hard they work! They look all sweaty and mussed at practice, so we KNOW they work hard. I don't think women's tennis would be recognized as such a difficult sport if they all competed in heavy makeup and fancy hairstyles and didn't grunt when they hit the ball!
i love the make up and curled hair, especially the bow. In my opinion, it's novelty and its what makes this "sport" so much fun. Who is to say what is "looking more athletic"...that's completely based on opinion viz. judged differently based on perception. If by more athletic you mean for cheer to mimic other sports children are in then I'm for sure against that camp. I would never send my atheletes on the cheer mat in cletes, a jerzee, and a helmet; or out on the floor with a naked pony sans bow for that matter.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that in cheer we have that option, and I FOR ONE LOVE the glamour that goes with cheer; especially the attention to detail that goes out in polishing not only a routine but your teams specific look. Its sport specific, and performance oriented...so for as long as I'm coaching its big bows, flashy uniforms, full make up, and a killer routine to top it off =)
however on the flipside, i cheer at a college that enforces the "no-pony no-bow" look. Our girls must come to every game full make up and full hair (must be down and styled) , and I must say i really do miss the bow =( especially for partner stunting.
