So, again, based on this comment, I ask my qeustion - Does a team HAVE To have someone under the Senior age bottom (10 years old) in order to be considered Senior Open? I would think that they would have to, because otherwise they are really a Senior or Senior Co-Ed team. However, I am not sure any competition company is going to stop & take the time to check for 9-year-olds to guarantee the "open" part of open. I am not trying to cause an arguement or huge off topic discussion, not am I questioning the USASF powers that be. I happen to agree completely with their leveling. I am asking a serious question in hopes of clarification.
It is my understanding that a team does not have to have someone under 10 to be in this division. So a Senior Open squad could have all 18 year old athletes if they want.
In that case this is an option for gyms whose Senior team has ages 10 to 18 to choose which Senior division they want to be in. I hope all the Senior teams jump over to open so that it's a truly competitive division, instead of just two or three in each.
The argument for Senior Open is that gyms like Power and Cheer Odyssey always win at certain competitions, so it's there for the smaller gyms to have a chance. Yet Power and Cheer Odyssey are both in the Senior Open Level 3 division. What am I missing, am I reading things wrong? I am not being negative, I am trying my best to understand the reasoning behind this weird Senior Open division.
1. Senior Open is not a Worlds division, so gyms in this division don't have to worry about that competition. 2. Smaller gyms that don't have 36 senior age athletes can compete in the senior open division since there is not a lower age limit. 3. Larger gyms that have 36 senior age athletes can compete in the senior/senior coed divisions. 4. It doesnt' happen very often that a gym will have exactly 36 senior age athletes. What about the 14 additional athletes. For this group, they can add in some younger athletes and compete in a Senior Open division. This will often be at a lower level (like 3). This is what we do at ACE.
Although the Senior Open can be at level 5 it is usually lower and allows a gym to "mix and match" some athletes that just might not fit on another team.
I'm not a huge fan of the division, but while we have it, we try to use to to benefit our athletes as much as possible.
I love it when people on here act like they what their talking about. If you have been in all stars for a LONG time you would know that NCA nationals had the senior and senior open division for the LONGEST time. World Cup actually used to be in Senior open. It just meant you have athletes younger than 10 on your team. Now if a Senior team had athletes on their team younger than 10 , those "regular" Senior teams would complain that they have small flyers. We all know people do that all the time. They criticize teams for having really small flyers, although they have NO choice in who they get at tryouts. Originally the USASF made the division for small gyms only, but other gyms complained about it. Then USASF made it for teams with 20 members and under on their team (all girl). Then later this summer they added you could have boys and go up to 36. Again these are for gyms who have younger members on their team. How can you not understand that. Every competition I have attended the Senior 3 division has had enough competition in both open and regular, so what is the big deal. No competition gurantees you to have 5 or more competitors. I think its a great division. They have tried to limit ages and divisions while getting a HUGE backlash from small gyms who don't like the ideas at all. I think they need to bring the small gym division back with gyms who have 80 members or less in their program.
