RE: Prices

Somehow I missed your post OC Mom and your itemized list.  I thought it was hilarious, thanks!

Cheer is expensive.  i did high school, so i expected it to be cheap, but it was over 1500 dollars. each year.  i was on the same squad, but for some reason, the coach decided we needed new different uniforms each year, along with different color poms, different shoes, different bows, etc.  I don't think anything was the same from year to year.  The coach did not care that it was getting more expensive.  I think one year the uniforms were 750$, camp was 300$ and competitions were more added on later.

I am not cheering this year, and started gymnastics instead.  I am stuck at a low level, doing cartwheels and walkovers, when i have my full, because of the cost.  Currently, i am not on a "team", just in a class, because going 2 hours once a week as i am now, is 80$ a month.  To move up one level, i would have to go 10 hours a week, which would be almost 500$, plus leotards and grips.

Gymnastics can be ten times more expensive than cheer. Better stay at those lower levels!

Just remember that coaches and gyms also have to keep up with the "times." If your gym gets to use their uniforms more than one or two years, you are VERY lucky. But the judges and crowd know what to expect when they see your gym on the performance list, so you need to bring something new to the table. This isn't just limited to the routines.

Also, when you get new uniforms, this also gives the gym a new-found sense of unity. Returners would be bored. Yes, we all love to pay less.... but you get what you pay for. And in the long run, cheer is MORE than what you pay for.

OC Mom....I have to say I ALWAYS love your posts and usually agree with you but this time I have to say that you DON'T have to change uniforms often to stay competitive or feel a sense of unity.  My gym has had the same ones for at least as long as my daughter has cheered (4 years) and I know several years before that.  I'm pretty sure there has only been 1 major uniform change in our 17 years.  Most girls see it as a proud tradiiton of our gym.  Parents love that the only uniform buys are the occasional size changes with growth and you can almost always swap pieces with others.  Occasionaly I will see uniforms with cut-outs, sequins, 1 arm showing etc. and be slightly envious but I'll stick with tradition and cost savings anyday.  But hey...as long as parents know these things before hand then every gym has to do what they think is best!  JMO
