I think a great cheer is something that is simple and to the point. It is always great to hear your crowd cheering along with the team. For example, I constantly find myself saying the words to cheergyms' cheer it is just so catchy you have to say the words, AHHHHHHH STRONG!
Oh, now I'm being called out There are a gizzillon cheers out there. I must have heared over a thousand, last season, and I am sure I will hear a thousand more, this season.
I enjoy "cheers" that exude confidence. Those "cheers" that state why the team is on the floor in the first place. Those "cheers" that show pride for their gym and their colors.
Sorry, I really do not care for "cheers" that may taunt the next opponent. Words/phases like dominate, intimate, feared by many, you'll never beat us, etc. To me (and only me) this is showing a lack of sportsmanship. THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION.
However, if the motions are not clean and the team isn't in sync, the words just don't matter.
Why do you need words anyway? You are not judged on creativity of the 2 8-counts of words. The judges are going to write on the score sheets "Wow! Great use of words!" The judges are looking at the motions and probably not really listening to what is being said on the floor. Especially, when a small gym is on the floor and really doesn't have a large parent participation.

So are the words really that important?
Yes they are important, it makes the girls feel more confident. I feel its like anything else, when the team enjoys it , then it makes the performance better to watch. I think most of the teams in Nor Cal have basic cheers, which is ok. I prefer them a little longer. Before most of them hop on here and say, its cause they are adding more skill, thats not true, they just add a motion section or another recycled tumbler we don't need to see. LOL
I think Morton & Danny have done an excellent job with their chant. There's some sound effect that goes off before the chant, and it's turned me into Pavlov's dog, everytime I hear something like that in someone else's routine I feel the need to start "cheergyms.com, better than ever, allllll strong" (yeah, I know it's ahhhh strong, but I like it this way ;) ).
Every year I would get excited when Athletic Perfection came out because I swore this would be the year I would get the EXACT wording. I was drawn to it because at the end the chant goes "athletes are we". I like that, but I think it changed last year.
I always get swept up in the "Experience the POWER" movement, I mean, how can you not, half the auditorium is chanting. I liked the one they had before this too: power, power, we are the best, POWER oh yes.
I still miss the individual cheergyms gym cheers: PYR - AMIDS, pyramids; the m is back again, mmooootions (long o, not like the sound a cow makes :) ); i - llu - sions (clap on the syllables), illusions (while your palms face each other with fingers pointing at the sky and wave like an ocean); 7 - 2 - OH, you knoooow; FOCUS, focus clapclap clapclap; colony, colony, colony, colony.
The words can sometimes give teams power and gives thier family and friends and oppurtunity to be involved in the competition. Don't get me wrong it is hard to here small teams, but that chant or cheer may help an injured athlete endure until the end of the performance instead of falling to the ground in pain. Something that seems so silly and remedial to some, can mean so much to others.
