If cheerleading isn't a sport then how come it involves so much work?
Sport: (dictionary.com) Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. A particular form of this activity. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively. An active pastime; recreation.
does it anywhere say that it is challenging another opponent?? no!
I belive Cheerleading is a sport acticity. Cheerleading is the named the top most dangrous womens sport inthe world. Being a former Gymnast and a cheerleader as well competeting at top levels and having WAY more muscles than 90% of the guys at my school since kindergarden till now and everyone asking wow where do u work out. honestly i have never worked out at a gym Gymnastics and cheerleading are both sports you have to be in physical shape to do what we do to be lifted or lift a person in the air is amazing. And if people dont take us seriously and thik that were just short skirt big bows and loud voices then they need to watch us compete or go to a national championship. Cheer involves just as much hardwork and energy as any other sport and CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT!!!!!!
I'm very familar with the dictionary, HOWEVER, it is in my opinion that the dictionary doesn't give the right definition for a sport. A sport is a physical activity that involves directly scoring on an opponent and being able to stop an opponent scoring on you. Basically, as a team or individual, you can control what your opponent does and you can control the outcome.
Now then, this doesn't involve chess, tetris, or any other type of "game". If you think there is physical activity in moving your pawn one space, then as I said before, get into a gym.
So, where does that leave cheerleading, track and field, gymnastics, etc, etc? They are all activities that require athletes to be at their best in order to win.
Just a question for Penelope, why would you want to know in the first place? (not trying to sound mean in any way) i am just wondering. Thanks, Cheergyms All-Star
Illusions Senior... As Nelson said, in a "sport" you can control how your opponent performs, ie good defense or a strong offense. In cheerleading, gymnastics, etc. you can only do your best and hope you are THE best, but there is no way you can affect the performance of your opponents.
Baseball is a sport in that you can stop your opponent from scoring by the way you pitch a game, making plays in the field in order to stop your opponent from scoring, and being able to directly score off of your opponent by hitting the ball well and driving in runs.
Swimming is not a sport in that you cannot score or stop your opponent from scoring. Swimming falls into that category where as an athlete you need to be at the top of your game to win.
Really!! again why did u ask this in the first place!? (not trying to sound mean in any way) but seriously! just let it go... everyones answer is really good but i don't think its something to stress over
yup, I look forward to seeing what the next opinion is.... And it's great to see these athletes thinking so much!!!!! I wonder if football players would be having such an intellectual debate??!! (Hmmm...J/K!!!) I also wonder if Penelope has her answer yet? There have been a lot of good ones.
