Now that All Stars, High School, and any other Cheer tryouts have taken place, I thought it might be interesting to hear if any of you jumped to a new all-star gym, decided on high school versus All Stars (or visa versa), or decided to stay put.
Let us know your justifications and reason why you may have left. What do you like about your new "opportunities" that you were not happy with last season?
Maybe you didn't leave at all and really like where your at. I'm sure your gyms would love to hear that too.
All and all, in this end of this thread, I am sure all gym owners, high school advisors, or volunteer coaches will digest what you, all, are saying and look to make their gym that much better this season.
We are at a new all star gym. NOT because we didn't like OC, actually the contrary. But because Em's coach from last season was someone she really enjoyed and he is coaching only one team this year in his own place. So we are giving it a run. We both love OC very much and would reccomend it to anyone. (actually we still do, even though they don't know. I believe 3 of my friends have signed up there. Their kids are all little.)
Em also cheers for her high school. In the beginning it was because she just wanted to get the experience, but now because she LOVES it. Her old coach from OC will be her competition coach this year and she is very very happy about that. And her freshman coach from this year will be her Varsity coach too! She feels as if she's getting the best of both worlds!!!

My daughter did not go back to cheer his year. She has done All Star cheer for 2 and ˝ seasons. In the last 2 years she has gone from not being able to do a cartwheel to in the last month having her standing back tuck.
Last year at tryouts she was placed on an intermediate team, the team competed at this level for 1 competition (she was able to do a round off back tuck and landed it!) then moved down to novice, it was very disappointing to a girl who is 12 and working so hard to improve her skills.
Oh I am sooooooo sorry!!!! That is truly disappointing!!! Have you looked in to other gyms? I think it would be MORE disappointing to give up after gaining so much ground in such a short time!

I wanted to try that with her, but she was told by a friend that going to another gym would be like commiting suicide if she wanted to cheer in high school, small town 1 cheer gym 2 high schools
OC mom, does South county reign have a website? Good luck to you guys. I can't believe how much all stars has grown in OC over the last 5 years. I remember when CA Quakes and Magic were the only thing down there and that was less than 7 years ago.
All Star mom- If she is talented, then going to another cheerleading gym should not be a problem...also if she does go then that should not effect her trying out for HS as that would be a major conflict of interest meaning that just because a coach does both should not mean that if they coach all star as well those all stars should make it over athletes that are not. I have heard of this happening but times change and so do coaches.
Giving up cheer is hard for some kids, especially when they love it and in your daughters case are talented!!
Good luck to your daughter whatever she decides to do.

I agree with everyone else All Star Mom. You should try another Gym. If she loves cheer then try a different avenue. As they say in Galaxy Quest " Never give up Never Surrender"! Lol
All Star Mom, I'm sure that is frustrating for her. It's hard to look at the overall picture and look at the team as a whole when your daughter is affected by it. It's great your daughter did so well in such a short time, but if she was one of a handful of girls who had intermediate skills, the majority of girls would have had a very disappointing season. Hopefully when they moved to novice they did well?
My daughter is at the same gym this year; she is very happy there and that's all that matters. But I always hope from season to season that if her team doesn't do well, at least her skills improve and she excels on an individual level. If I can't have that, then I hope that at least her team has a successful season, because there is a lot of joy in going out there and winning as a team. Ideally both would be great of course! But none of that would make any difference if she didn't enjoy it; I'm grateful she's found a sport she loves and has stuck with it.
xpressjag: no, no website yet. Yea, Orange County has grown like wildfire!!! There are 3 gyms within 2 miles of each other in Rancho Santa Margarita and another just closed... it's nuts.
Apparently Cal Elite closed it's cheer program and kept it's gymnastics program. All of these gyms Cal Elite, Reign, OC All Stars and Pacific Athletics are LITERALLY right down the street from each other!!! You could walk to all 4!!!! Isn't that crazy???
Yea, it's growing quickly. I am just wondering that the long term effects will be. But, there are 10 High Schools within a 20 minute total driving distance.... and there's a new one that just opened. So there are kids here.... and lots of them. Interesting.....
There are areas where there are NO gyms.... and if one were inclined, there could be big business. But you have to have the initial $$$ to do it right. People down here have expectations above what I have seen or am used to. Almost to the point of ridiculousness. So if one did it right, they could really really take off.
Oh, and I loved Galaxy Quest...... that would be a good gym name too....

We are staying with the same gym. We commute about an hour to get there even though there is a gym closer to us and less expensive. I am very happy with how my daughter has grown and advanced here. The coaches are top notch and the staff is like family.

Goodness, Thats certainly sad to hear, I think you should try a different team. Especially if this is something that she loves to do! What area are you from?
I agree, try to find another gym before giving up (if cheerleading is truly her passion). But one point I was trying to make earlier is that sometimes there are no guarantees your child will be put in a higher level somewhere else. And on top of that, there are no guarantees that team will stay at that level. Raise your hand if you know of teams that started at a higher level only to drop down early in the season? I see a lot of hands out there. Others dropped down mid-season, and even others right before Nationals. And these are well populated, well respected gyms with plenty of talent. Gyms will do what is best for their teams, regardless of the individual skills your child has. I guess all you can do if that happens is continue to work on your individual skills during tumbling (and maybe privates)? and hope for the best next season.
I was just checking out California Spirit Elites web site and wanted to say congradulations on your turnout this year. The gym has doubled in size. Thats awesome. It looks like it's going to be a great year.
