We are doing HS cheer this year again and we got a new advisor last year that tried to tell the girls they couldn't do allstar and HS as she was not going to allow them to miss any HS stuff for allstars. We had a couple allstar girls not tryout because of this. Another mom and I talked to the advisor/coach and explained to her how it was possible to do both and she reluctantly let us. It ended up working out well and we only missed one basketball game for allstars the whole season. She also missed one allstar practice in August for HS camp and that was it.
This year the allstar program is wanting girls to be on more than one team which makes it harder to do HS in addition. My daughter is not up to doing three teams. Some girls can handle it, mine can not. She has had her fair share of injuries the past few years and two teams is her limit. She did not want to give up HS so we had to make a decision on what to do. We found a new allstar home that will allow her to do both and both coaches are being wonderful about working around the other's schedule! Our allstar coach even asked when our HS camp is so she doesn't schedule our choreography practices during that time! That was amazing to me that she would take the time to care, much less work her schedule around a few girls that are affected. Our HS coach is getting our allstar comp schedule and is going to make sure our HS team goes to the same comps as our allstar teams also!
All of this for three girls!!! As unbelievably stressful as it was to make the decision to move allstar gyms, it is all working out for the best for my daughter as our other gym is a larger gym that just can't offer that kind of flexibility which I completely understand.
Bladezmom - have you talked to the advisor about your situation at all, I didn't think I would get anywhere with our's last year and to my surprise it all worked out. I hope it does for you too!
I haven't spoken to her as of yet. She seems a little head strong and sicne we JUST started, I don't want to make waves. I want her to see that I am co-operating with her rules she's set out so far and then I'm going to approach her about working with us on competitions we may need to miss. There are others on the squad as well that cheer with us at Bladez (5 in total).
We don't have a competition schedule for either one yet, so I need to wait. Some of the parents are grumbling about the added expectations from these kids that already make a major commitment just to cheer High School. Some parents aren't even aware of what a compettion is, so they don't realize the drive, specator entry fee or price of a hot dog that it will cost them to go watch something their daughter is not even participating in! I think they will be yelling the loudest!
Hey OC Mom my daughter is going to Tesoro next year and they told us at the meeting last night that the kids cannot do both allstars and high school. That certainly made for an easy decision for my daughter. She would never give up allstars.
Hey Cali Cheers, That is illegal for the high school to tell you that your daughter can't do allstar and high school at the same time. If your daughter can manage doing both at the same time then she can do it. Go and talk with your director of secondary education at your school district.

It may or may not be illegal. If high school cheer is treated as a sport, then kids can't do all stars during the high school cheer season (basically all year) just like soccer, basketball, baseball, etc. can't do American Legion or elite travel squads during the season.

That is why high school cheerleading needs to have a real season, not all year long. They should have a football and basketball cheerleading squad SEPERATE. They just need a more regulated season, and it will solve alot of the issues.
and yet....they dont want to recognize it as a sport.....
oh, and just an "inside note" on Tesoro, have her tryout anyway. if the new coach is either two of the three in contention, doing both will be allowed.... just turn down the position should the third coach be chosen. you wont lost out on anything. two of the three coaches going for the position also work for all star gyms.

Thanks for all of the info!!! I will have her try out and see what happens. She is only going to be a freshman so I do not see how any of the scheduling would conflict.
and if you end up with an all star coach, you can feel much safer that they won't have her doing crazy things on the sidelines. last year.... well THIS YEAR the freshman didn't stunt much on the sidelines that I saw. Gotta LOVE Tesoros uniforms. I love the giant T. I didn't like the white skirt with the blue top, but I believe that was their competition uniform.
You and I definately need to meet cause i have LOTS of friends whose kids attend Tesoro. About 10 of them are incoming freshman and many more older!!! 26th huh? It's comin up quick! If I hear any more news, I will let you know right away.... and I will see you at the games as well!!!!

OMgoodness. You haven't seen these items yet? Okay, I know you have seen the belt buckles that rotate messages acrossed the belt buckles with neon messages.
Okay, well think about the same concept with the front of a baseball cap or the back of a letterman jacket. These items are actually really kinda fun. It would be so fun to have these items glowing your gym logos at competition.
oh could you imagine? team jackets that light up!!!!
