Open Team Opinions....

I have a question for everyone...

Lets say that Gym A offers an Open or Open International team for people who are over the age limit for Senior age all stars, and Gym B doesn't have any option for "old" people.

How would you feel about a coach from Gym B cheering on that team at Gym A?  If you're a gym owner or director, do you see it a a huge conflict of interest?  As a parent, do you have a problem with your child being coached by someone who cheers for a different gym?  As an athlete, would you upset if your coach cheered somewhere else?

If you disagree with cheering on an open team at a different gym, what do you think this coach should do in this situation, knowing that their home gym doesn't offer them a team to cheer on?

Just wondering!  Maybe someone can help me out...

If the one gym does not have an open team, it seems like a good way to unite 2 gyms! Why not? The kids get to see their coach perform and they develop somewhat of a relationship with the other gym. As long as the coach doesn't seem more interested in his/her open team than the team they coach. (I have seen this happen) Personally it seems like a win win to me!

As a parent, I think at first I might be taken aback. But, once I stopped to realize that my daughter's gym doesn't have what the coach needs in order to continue cheering, I would be alright with it. Hey! maybe it would even help blur the frozen tundra between competitors, so that the two gyms would cheer for each other.

However, if the gym my daughter cheers at does have an old folks team and her coach chooses to cheer at a different gym, that might make me do some serious inquiring.

I know what you are feeling Amac.(if it is you who is feeling this way) I think that person should talk to the owners and find out their opinion. If they dont offer a team for that person, it isnt really fair to deprive them of cheering. BUT, sometimes you have to realize whats best for the company you work for. Hopefully this helps, if you have any questions, email me. I will let you know how I went about talking to my boss(s). :)

If I remember correctly, OC's gym did not have an open team, but several coaches continued to cheer with Orange Crush. I personally don't have an issue, but I could see where an owner might think "conflict of interest". I would also have to think that both gyms would need to be able to "agree" to the arrangement.

As a mom of an athlete -- my kid LOVEs LOVEs LOVEs to see their coaches on the floor, doing the same things that they tell the kids to do.

Open Team Opinions....

thats what one of my coaches did 2 years ago. our gym didnt have an open team so she went to a different gym but still coached for us. she only did that for one year though , the next year she didnt join that open team anymore. not sure why but she did say that she misses performing. i think its okay if the coach really still wants to cheer but theyre not given that opportunity at their gym. theres not much else they can do if theyre over the age limit and still want to do all star cheer

LadyW is correct. OC had SEVERAL coaches who cheered for Orange Crush while coaching for OC and it didn't cause issues at all! The poor coaches were quite sore on some days, but Crush didn't practice too often, so they weren't torn between two different places.

When we are all at the same competitions, the kids of OC were THRILLED to see their coaches performing. It was nice to see that your coach didn't just talk the talk....

They walked the walk..... and that gave the parents even MORE confidence in their ability to coach the kids because they knew FIRST HAND what the kids were feeling....

As a matter of fact, this has gone on for a few years now. And I am sure it will happen again for the coaches at OC cause they love what they do.

This is an interesting topic. Especially because Northern California doesn't really offer established open teams, just in southern cali. Does anyone know of any. I think Rockets have one and Sac Royals both were very small. And of course cheergyms who ROCK if I may say so myself! Any others? I'm probably missing a lot, I'm sleepy!
