There's been lots of talk this year about too many bids being given out. Lets compare 2007 numbers to 2006. Small Senior, Int'l Coed and Int'l All girl have doubled in bids. Yet the other divisions did not increase that much. There are also more teams from other countries, 31 in 2007 vs 2006 only had 19 teams. And this year it appears all of those Int'l teams are in the Int'l divisions unlike last year.

Huh, it seems that the numbers are proving all those grumbling wrong. I don't have a problem with the number of bids given out, I think it's great to go to a competition and actually have competition.
I know some complain that before Worlds was more prestigious and just being invited to go was a huge deal. However, my daughter's gym is going and I'm excited for them just being invited, so I think it's still a big deal. I've seen other teams when they earn their bid and they don't seem blase about it at all.
Last year there were "international" teams competing in the "regular" divisions? That must have been tough for them because typically don't the "international" teams have very different age and skill levels?
edited: what about the years before last year? can you find out what the bid numbers were for 2004 and 2005?
Its very difficult for them but they are trying out the waters. Their skill level is alittle behind but I think over time they too will eventually catch up as cheer in general is getting more and more attention and growing in major leaps and bounds. I can see it being an Olympic sport one day soon.
The whole process does seem to be about giving more level 5 teams the opportunity to have the experience of attending Worlds, whether they are true contenders or not. I don't think anyone can deny that, and my guess is that the bids will continue to increase, not decrease. Whether that's good or bad depends on what Worlds is supposed to represent, and that opinion seems to vary.
The Dance Worlds are in the same boat. There are only about 12 teams in the "regular" divisions and then 30 in the international open.
This being the first year dance is doing a worlds has had a lot of controversy. Especially in the POM area. Jazz, hip-hop there really is no questions -- but POM has 2 different judging criteria and it depends on how the judges look at it as true POM (no technique) or POM with advanced technique.
Also -- how the are defining OPEN -- Open is really over 18 in this case and your routine can be, hip hop, jazz or pom -- Now -- how do you judge that? How can you compare a hip-hop routine against a jazz routine or even against a POM routine...
But it still should be 1 heck of a competition.....

BUT, judging hip hop, jazz and POM against one another!?! That sounds like madness to me.
Don't feel bad -- I learned all these terms this year too. It took me 2 years to figure out cheer terms! But dance, it has to be all in FRENCH --
Term for the Day #1 Pirouettes Do the girls do those turns that make them look like spinning tops Term for the Day #2 Switch leaps do they leap back and forth (not toe touchs) like a gazelle Term for the Day #3 fouette a la second (also known as "Seconds") Do they all do those turns with 1 leg out Term for the Day #4 fan kicks, toe touches do they jump in the air and not come down -- this all comes down to FLEXIBILITY.
