Im new to competitve cheer, and OUR COACHES ARE THE BOMB!!! What is the normal fees and stuff for them? I just think they desrve more and thats why coaches keep leaving because they arent appreciated enough.
Does any other gym pay for the coaches to be at competitions with our children? because we arent currently paying them. How about airfare? They have to pay for their own now, and part of the hotel is paid for, but they have to pay the other half. They also have to pay for most of their meals, only 1 lunch/snack is paid for.
Our coaches are paid and fed and get their travel arranged and paid for. The only time they watch the kids are when they warmup till performance. Basically, when they are coaching. After that, the parents are responsible. The parents get the competition schedule in Sept./Oct. They know which days they need to be where and if they can't go, they arrange for a chaperone for their child on that day. It's a little easier for us with 360+ kids. But you'd be surprised how involved the coaches are with the families and kids when they aren't coaching. The student coaches do not get paid. But the parents take care of them pretty well. If they are in high school, they can either get hired by the gym or get volunteer hours needed to graduate.
The coaches should not have to pay for airfare or hotels. Depending on their experience and what they are coaching (one team, and tumbling classes or just a team etc) will depend on what they get. For instance, if it's a 1st year team coach, who's in college, coaching a level 2 team, $10 an hour along with all expenses paid (hotel, airlines, as well and food money for an out of town trip). If the coach is more experienced, say 5 years coaching and they coach a level 5 team then something like $15 ($1 raise each year up to say $20 or something) an hour along with all travel expenses paid. I also agree that the coaches should not be watching the kids longer then they need to warm-up and perform. The parents need to be responsible unless their are no parents at the comp because say it's out of state and no parents went, only then would that be their job to do. Hope that helps! Cheers!
For competitions, our Coaches get their hotel rooms paid for, travel expenses (airfare/gas) covered, and a food stipend. The Coaches who in addition to their teams, have Specialty Division (Solos, Stunts, etc) kids competing, get paid extra for coaching them also.
Our Coaches aren’t used as chaperons. The parents chaperon their own kids. The Team Moms check them in, get them ready (uniform, make-up, etc) and bring them to the Coaches. At competitions our Coaches get to be focused 100% on coaching.
Back at the Gym, our Coaches get paid $30-$40 per hour for coaching, depending on their experience. We also make sure none of them are working at the Gym more than 5 days/week, to help guard against coach burn-out. At the end of the season, the coaches also receive their “season completion bonus” which equates to about a 20% addition to their pay.
Also, to reward our Coaches for all their hard work, we take them on an all expense paid CheerForce Coaches vacation every summer. This past summer the vacation was at a resort in Palm Springs. The year before, it was a week-long Mexican cruise. And the year before that, we rented a huge cabin on the lake in Big Bear (water skiing, tanning, BBQs, Jacuzzi, etc, etc).

I will relocate!
FO Sho!!! I could come to Love SO CaL!!! LOL I need a new job....
Currently, there looks to be answers from gyms that have lots of cheerleaders as clientele.
However, there hasn’t been an answer here from a small gym that looks to pay the ‘normal’ bills/obligations from month to month with no extra money in the end. Why is this?
Maybe it is time to share the true realities of a small gym.
Here goes, first of all, the owner(s) only are in this business for probably just 2 reasons:
Reason 1: For the love of the sport Reason 2: Maybe they have a cheerleader in their household that loves the sport.
Those two reasons alone, did not say they are in it for the money.
Owners of small gyms are often times “donating” their own time to:
.coach .clean their own gyms .order uniforms .register for competition .seek out liability coverage .organize fundraisers for their cheerleaders to be able to compete as a cheerleader .organize team pictures, organize the team banquets .do their own accounting, seek out other opportunities like choreography for high school teams .build cheer camps for the youth teams .answer to parents .learn to mix music to sale to other cheer groups, etc.
The list is never ending and at the end to the day; there is no compensation. The owner just hopes they have make enough money to keep the lights on.
Truly to be a small gym owner, an individual is putting in over a 40 hours a week just to keep the gym running. However, with no compensation the owner is probably holding down another 40 hour a week job to make sure the family is taken care of.
Why does the small gym owner do all this…because of the love of the sport? YES!
Now, sure a gym has hired coaches to help with the cheer and tumbling instructions, these are the only individuals in the gym that actually walk away with a paycheck each month. How nice that would be, come in to a clean gym, with new equipment, instructor for a couple of hours and then walk out the door and COLLECT a paycheck.
Traveling to competitions is interesting as well. The small gym owner must look for ways to save money, as well. The owner will drive to a venue that is 10 hours away, instead of flying, they will seek out hotels that gives the best rates, etc. Save every penny to be able to in turn, pay for their coaching staff room and board.
But yet, that is not enough, the staff wants more, they want to be paid when there are at an overnight competitions, they want to be flown to the location, because the competition is just to far to drive. This is just something that a small gym can not provide. Oooooh the small gym owner could provide this if they are willing to put it on a personal credit card and go into debt to keep their coaches happy.
It’s quite frustrating to a small gym owner to see postings like the one CF has posted, only because a small gym owner can not provide the same “luxuries”.
The reality of a small gym honestly sucks.
However, everyone has their day. Some day this small gym will be successful and will be able to send their coaching staff on a fun cruise or some sort of retreat. Hopefully, the day is coming soon, because this small gym owner is getting tired and could use a real vacation.
My question to these small gym owners...WHY? Unless there are no other existing gyms in your area, why start up a gym? If you have a child that loves the sport, find an existing gym to put her/him in. If you love the sport and coaching, and are good, you can get a job coaching.
From a business perspective, any business needs capital to get started and have financial investment backers for at least 2-3 years. Most small businesses aren't profitable until 3-5 years into it. So you have to have enough money to put into your business on a regular basis to make it successful.
Too many small gyms are started without any strong financial backing. And they wonder why the staff/owner gets burned out, or the kids move to other gyms because the parents start worrying about how their money is being spent.
Again, go back to the original reason you started your gym. Was it to become a successful business owner? Then look at if as a business, not a hobby. It takes lots of money and time to make any business successful.
Also take this into consideration. Dont you think that succesful gyms ie. Cheerforce have paid their dues. I believe they started out with just 2 teams practicing in the park.
I cant imagine starting a business because "My daughter was in cheerleading." or "It was a hobby" You are going to struggle if you did this for those reasons.
I wish you sucess with your business and goodluck to all your teams this season :)
I also dont understand what reason people have for continuing with small small gyms. I own a medium/smaller gym and I have a salary....I dont have coaches that volunteer. I am always in awe when I hear other owners say that they have the same amount of kids as we do and they dont pay themselves. That just seems silly. Yes coaching is a passion but everyone needs to make a living.
Along with having a larger gym, we also have larger bills, larger buildings, more equiptment to buy, more parents to take care of, more of everything!!! But I will tell you this, there's always parents who are willing to do those things that the smaller gyms need done in exchange for privates, reduced coaching fees, etc. And trust me, that is worth more than what you would pay someone else to do.
We found parents to help out in areas that we needed help in and that is HUGE. Also, you really do need to invest in a couple of VERY VERY GOOD coaches to get more kids in your gym. There's a reason why the large gyms are so large. You have to have the best coaching in order to draw in the kids. My kid is in cheer but I wouldn't DREAM of opening a gym. I don't have the background that would draw in the big crowds.
A cheer resume should ALWAYS be first before hiring. Do your homework. Just cause you love cheer or have been cheerleading most of your life, doesn't give you the experience to coach. Those are two totally different things.
I think it all boils down to a business plan. If you have a businees plan and maintain collection of fees than you should be in good shape. I think that all of these little gyms that do it for the kids, also dont collect money in a timely organized manner.
Its all about Business, some people are organized smart business people and others are not. It has nothing to do with how big your business is. Its all relative.

what if you had a cheerleader that was not able to pay on time but was one of your best flyers. would you cut her or let her stay on until she could get caught up with payments?
We all love the sport but and I say that with a BUT you also have to realize that if youn want your gym to survive you have to run it like a business cause that's what it is. I sometimes think if I had the money I'd love to open a gym. I was a bookeeper and I have some background in accounting but as far as all the licences insurance etc.. I don't have that knowledge. Then the coaching staff gym equipment etc. Again this is business and has to be run like one. Good Luck
That happens to the best of us. My suggestion would be to volunteer! You could work off your bill! Sometimes the work you would do would be even more benificial to the gym than the cash!!! But be open and honest with your director/owner. Let them know what's happening. Work things out.
