First off I'd like to start by saying that everyone at JAMZ did amazing! Congrats to all athletes who performed their hearts out! Now let's analyze the look for the new season.....
Competitive cheerleading has evolved immensely over the past few years, and in order to keep up with the best, you've got to have it all - hot look, innovative choreography, talent, and personalized music. My area of expertise? Uniforms!
Walking around the competition I saw many looks on display, new and old. Now, let me preface this by saying that I do not intend any disrespect to any programs mentioned in this article, however I think a good, honest commentary about the "looks" of the upcoming season is in order.
All-Star Cheerleading has developed into a sassy, flashy sport, all while maintaining a high level of athleticism. Likewise, the "look" of all-star cheerleaders has evolved. The happy-go-lucky look of yesterday is history, and the new trend seems to be a fierce, I'm-gonna-kick-a*s-and-take-the-trophy type of performance. I'm not badmouthing the happy-go-lucky teams, however, you have to agree that it's mostly the ones with the fierce attitudes and looks to match that make it Worlds, and win the titles!
The new look in uniforms is athletic, streamlined, slimming, and modernly fun! Full-length tops and skirts worn above the belly-button are yesterday in terms of all-star cheer. Pyramids and Cheergym people, I'm sorry to say this, but with the level of talent you have along with your excellent program facilities and such, your look hasn't changed over the years at all! Bulky sweaters with random splashes of color coupled with the logo "star-guy" isn't doin' it. My suggestion is that you call the Elite Uniform Company and have them design something more traditional and flattering because your attempt at looking modern puts you in a uniform category on your own, and not a very good one. However, if your goal is to stand out and look "different" and maintain a sense of Amish modesty.... point taken.
Royal All-Stars.... you and so many other teams have potential. What I suggest is that you take your uniforms in to a tailor or seamstress, have them cut the midsection out and hem it, wear it as a midriff, and hike up the skirt. The metallics in the uniform highlight it, and the clean lines give you the competitive yet traditional edge! You're headed in the right direction, but you're just a few years behind schedule, is all. My recommendation is that you call your Varsity rep and demand something that will make little girls look like fierce women on the floor.
The darlings of the show this time around? The answer is very obvious! Ultimate All-Stars! Now I have to say that until recently, I haven't heard of this program at all. I looked up their website and saw their old look and compared it to the new one - HUGE improvement! The look and performance demeanor is VERY reminiscent of Cheer Athletics, Top Gun, U. of Louisville, GymTyme, Hawaii Pacific Univ., and all of the other top-notch teams! Clean lines on the uniform (no random color blotches), metallics used appropriately to highlight the look instead of overpowering it, athletic length of top and skirt, use of logo on the chest and custom stars on the sleeves and backside, innovative design (very fun and flattering), all-star glitter make-up, and zebra print (lots of people are doing this nowadays - not entirely original, but VERY trendy) make UA the easy favorite in the looks department for this season. Love the big hair and the curls too! Now, I usually am an expert when it comes to cheerleading fashion - I can glance at a uniform and tell you which company helped you or cheated you on your look, but I have to say that I am at a loss when it comes to which designer is responsible for your look? My guess is that it's an ultra-custom product, and probably one-of-a-kind? Either way, you guys look fierce and fabulous, and other programs out there could learn a lot from you in this department - maybe you'll be willing to share some of your secrets with us?
Until next time, everyone... Cheer hard and be fierce! Wear your colors proudly, even if you did get your shell tops and skirts from a discount, stock-made, mass-produced, colorblind cheerleading uniform rep. Just remember that help is available. If anything, you may want to hit up some of the UA folks the next time you see them to see if they'll give you any tips. Rumor has it that they have a private designer on staff?
What a great post!! I agree and disagree with some but thanks for your opinions! I know some will be angry with what you said but you are an intelligent person and we all can tell. Thanks again!
I think it's all about advertising, marketing, seeing if anyone is interested in changing their look by going with the same designer as Ultimate All Stars? I dunno...
i asked one of the girls where they had there uniforms done and she said they had a designer make it specially for them. i have to admit that there really cute. wish ours were like that.
Wow!!! What an awesome topic!!! Ultimate's new look is amazing. I know from experience that when you order uniforms (from anywhere) the fit and lengths aren't always what you expect, however from what I saw that day Ultimate hit it pretty much dead on! I wonder if alterations were necessary and how much a custom set like that would cost. I looked on the Jamz website at their pictures from that day and can't see the Varsity triangle or C&D diamond anywhere. Does anyone know of or have information on where they got them? Personally I'm fed up with Varsity. They have done my teams for the past 6 years and nothing ever came out like I had hoped, and they took forever!!! Motion's teams looked great too, I love the new metallic red, very flashy!
Response to the uniform police.... So which is it, are you from UA or are you from Elite Uniforms? Your post is obviously written for marketing purposes.
It's funny that people seem to think that I'm posting this for promotional purposes; you guys are reading waaaaay too deeply into my words. Take my posting for face value, it's purely a commentary of opinion based on what I saw. I have no affiliation with UA or Elite, CD, or Varsity, and I don't make a living as a uniform rep (at least not anymore) so there's no money involved.
Writing under a pseudonym is acceptable under "Anonymous Arlene" postings, otherwise, why would there be a section for anonymous posts? In any case I do want to stress to you all that this posting is not meant to slander or ridicule any program out there. I sincerely believe that all competitors in the all-star world today are amazing athletes! This is purely a commentary based on uniform trends; much like you'd see in the "best and worst dressed" columns in fashion magazines, but for cheerleaders.
To those of you who love the posting and the ideas (whether or not you agree), thank you. If you ever have questions regarding uniforms, need an opinion, or want a review, I'm happy to oblige. And I'll do my best to update you guys on the trends of this season as they come!
NCA implemented a new rule last year about the "collegiate appearance," stating that uniforms had to be more conservative and traditional, reffering to the "UCA" college look of full length shell tops with a bodyliner underneath, and decent length skirts. If you saw how U of L changed their look this year, you'll get the idea. And, to top it off, HPU was the only team last year who lost points for appearance, because they stuck to their "flashy, barely there" look.
Maybe judges really are looking for the best talent and not the best look. If you ask me, Motions and the rest of cheergyms have accomplished a flashy, yet conservative look, combining All-Star and College styles. And since the trend has been to do what the college level programs do, it will probably only be a matter of time before a similar rule is implemented at the All-Star level. So maybe Morton, Danny, Nelson, Derick, and the rest of them at cheergyms really do know what they're talking about, and maybe are even ahead of the times as opposed to behind, like most of you like to believe.
Just some thoughts having done the college thing for a year now, and after seeing trully the best talent out there. It doesn't matter what you wear or how you look, but what you do.
Lets all compete in shorts and t-shirts, with straight pony tails and no make up, and then see who comes out on top!

Your information is a bit wrong. NCA college nationals did implement that rule, but you can still wear half tops and v skirts, just there can only be so much skin showing. Lots of teams still wear half tops, its just Jeff Webb's influence over NCA. Too bad U of L just had a good routine in ugly uniforms. Those uniforms are hideous.
