crazy football coach

could this happen in the cheer world?
(Football world) Parent/who is the asst. coach is upset that their kid keeps getting hit hard and snaps! We all know that its hard to see your kid getting ruffed up, but 99% of us has the sense not to attack children who hurt our loved one.
(Cheer world) Could we see a cheer mom or dad snap when her flyer gets dropped one too many times? Then, run out in the middle of competition mat and tackle the bases? Just wondering..

Actually....yea, I can see it. A gym owner & a parent were arrested last year at a competition in Davis for pushing a 9-year old and a 12-year old off the chairs that they (the adults) wanted. It caused, I believe, minor injuries to one of the kids.

Granted, I do see the difference of a push/tap that would cause a kid standing in a chair to become off balance and the jump with a knee to the middle of the back of a 13-year old. But, I can still see it someday...unfortunately, probably not in the too distance future.

I'm really good friends with a lot of the parents at my gym. They often come to me for advice since I tend to know a lot about what happens and what not.

Well what I hear most are complaints about bases. I've had numerous parents talk to me asking why is my daughter being dropped? Those weak bases shouldn't be cheering if they can't hold up my daughter. I want new bases that know what they are doing. I just get so frustrated seeing her fall.

So yes I can see in the near future a parent snaping running out on the floor and hitting someone. I think they will come out and yell at the kids first, but you never know.

One more thing, my name states just a kid. I'm not really a "kid", but I'm not an adult either. I'm 19 and I cheer on an open team as well as coach a lot of gymnastics classes at the gym I work out at and cheer for. I just don't want to give off the wrong impression. I don't want people to think I'm some 12 year old hanging out with parents and not the kids.

This is totally off this subject, but stunt bases seem to be taking a lot of heat on this subject. What about the less than competent flyers that cause the stunts to fall? I have seen plenty of bases with bruises and bloody noses, etc... from flyers that can not handle it. There are plenty of upset parents of bases that are getting hurt as well as flyers that are getting dropped.

I agree that it can go both ways. The problem can be with either. You can have a flyer who clearly should not be one, causing grief and bruises/injuries for the poor bases. On the other hand, you can have bases who frankly don't care enough to base properly, causing much grief and injury to the flyer. I've seen both cases over the years.

A good coach recognizes where the problems are and makes the proper adjustments.

One of the factors in this subject is that everyone wants to fly! You don't generally see kids complaining that they aren't being allowed to base. But Mom's seem to think their angel should fly no matter what! (not all obviously) My pet peeve are the little bogers who can't stick their stunts and blame their bases! It is pretty stupid really, considering they rely on those same bases to save their butts! But I have seen a couple of really nasty flyers that could use a good talking to by the coach.

My thoughts exactly. It really pisses me off that there are coaches out there that will work and work with a Flyer and they totally don't deserve to be up in the air they are constantly blaming the bases, They bases are moving 6 to 7 feet sometimes to catch the flyer and its always the bases fault. I think I see it more often with the younger flyer. The immaturity shows when they fly. What happened to having Senior girls fly on Senior Girls and Juniors on Juniors ect. Ahhh the gold old days. I guess I need to move back east.

unfair

Well, I think it's unfair to assume younger (age-wise) flyers are inexperienced. I know of a young flyer on a Senior team who has been flying for years; they'll put her up before any of the Senior girls on that team. Inexperienced flyers, yes, I totally agree. But age does not always equal experience, especially in the world of cheer.

I also agree that it's ridiculous for coaches to work with a flyer who clearly is not capable; they have to know when it's time to try someone else.

I'm a base of course. I don't mind working with inexperienced flyers. They have to learn sometime. You can't expect to not have to teach a girl to fly every now and then. Girls just don't come to a gym knowing how to fly all the time. It is our job as bases to make sure that she stays up in the air and doesn't get hurt when she falls. If it means getting hit in the face and getting a bloody nose I'll take that chance. If you can't handle the pain then you need to think of a different sport. Everyone has their jobs. I've seen experienced flyers take a dive before and the bases caught her. The backspot broke his nose. Did he blame her? No. He simply went off the matt stuffed a piece of tissue up his nose to soke up the blood and put her back up in the stunt. That is a true base right there. Things happen. Experience or no experience. There's always a chance of getting hurt. A flyer tries to put her hands around you to early out of a double down and hits you in the face. A girl comes down wrong in a stunt or a basket and totally levels you. It is part of the sport.

I don't care how old a flyer is, if she is good! When a flyer continues to be loose, with her butt out, and totally blames the bases, who catch her every time...it is time to get rid of the flyer! I don't think team-mates should be blaming each other for things. Bad sportsmanship, if you ask me!

I once saw a lady assaulted by a psychotic angry cheer mom. The lady was close to the stage talking to her team BEFORE the team performed and the psycho mom told her to move, she didn't move fast enough because the psycho cheer mom started slamming her head into the stage (raised stage obviously). It wasn't even psycho moms team performing.

Remember the Mom from Texas who tried to hire a hit man because her daughter did not make a team and she wanted to "get rid" of the competition. CRAZY

I once explained to a mom whose daughter based my daughter that her child was more important to me out there than my own child. The bases make my daughter look good. A flyer isn't a flyer without her bases.

So she made cards for her bases that had a picture of an angel on the front and it said...

You Are My Wings....

That Make My Fly.

Yea, my kid flys. But she has 3 sets of wings below her.....

Yes, I've done the same thing...at the end of every year for nationals my daughter gets a special goody bag for every single one of her bases with an angel theme with candies and fun stuff in it she then writes thank you notes to all of her bases for keeeping her safe and being such a great base. Lots of times flyers get the credit (and Grief), but bases are very important to the mom's of flyers. THANK YOU AWESOME BASES!
