cheersport comp in atlanta

Need some help for those who have been to this competition at Georgia World Congress Center!

1. Is MARTA (like Bart) safe to take from the airport to the downtown hotels near the Georgia World Congress Center? It's so direct and so much cheaper than the taxi.

2. Anyone stay at the Holiday Inn Downtown or the Westin Peachtee hotel? I am trying to decide between the two- Holiday Inn is closer to the venue, but the Westin is closer to the MARTA station. I'm thinking it might be better to stay closer to the Georgia Wolrld Congress Center...

We went to cheersport for our first time last year but we had a lot of fun. Here are my recommendations.

1) We took MARTA to and from the airport and competition. It was very safe and we got a discount for the weekend of $12 a person for a weekend pass. For my daughter and I it was $24.00 (yea). We also got to our hotel much quicker then those taking cabs. (they also paid $36.00 a piece for the cab to the hotel)

2) Our gym took 5+ teams and we had people stay everywhere! I know that those that stayed at the Holiday Inn (rooms were loud but good sized) and the Westin (small rooms, not a lot of food choices) were a little dissappointed with thier rooms. We stayed at the Marriott Marquis and it was great, others stayed at the Sheraton and really liked it as well. Both were close to the MARTA station.

Atlanta is a great city - but bring your walking shoes and have fun.

It's always dangerous to give advice....so many things can go wrong. Anyway, I would recommend staying closer to the GWCC. Being able to go back to the hotel during and after the comp, it's easier if it's closer.

Be sure to make your reservations now. Most of the hotels are already sold out. They're expecting between 900 and 1000 teams.

thanks to the two replies above. i have reservations at both hotels presently..... reviews on both hotels were not too glowing! I was looking at a map of the hotels, and it seemed that the marriott marquis was a lot farther... yea, i agree that staying at the closer hotel (holiday inn) would be better. but, i am picky about hotels too. i would trust a marriott over a holiday inn anyday. westins are usually nice, but maybe not this one..... too bad cheersport took all the omni and embassy suites rooms for their lottery!

While the Marriott may be further as I said we had no problems getting to and from the competition using the MARTA just allow about 25 minutes to connect on MARTA. We did have some folks walk to and from and it took them about 20 minutes but they did not like walking close to the GWCC in the evening. Not to mention it was misting/raining most of the weeked so those who did not have MARTA to ride got wet!

I am little picky about hotels also and both the Marriott and Sherraton are very safe. I feel like I am a responsible poster and would not tell you anything "dangerous". The Westin is right across from the MARTA station, the Marriott is a block further but you can get to the MARTA through the Hotel and Shopping area and not have to go outside till you get to the GWCC then you are about 1/2 block from the exit.

I hope you have a great and safe trip!

The Hyatt didn't have food after 11 pm when the advanced teams were getting back and were hungry. Room service stopped answering their phones and they didn't have any resturant staff. It was scary.
