is cheer a sport?

Now, I am a cheerleader and I've always received the comments about how cheerleadin isn't a sport. My question to yall is "Is high school and all-star cheer a sport or just one of them?"

My point of view, high school cheer isn't a sport unless you compete for most of the season. I believe All-stars is the sport of cheerleading.

I agree with your view but would like to add that cheerleading in All Stars really SHOULDN'T be called cheerleading at all. We aren't leading cheers. But basically it's a sport and it's been proven before on here. You will get some who will say no, but everyone knows that it is.

i dont think this question will ever be answered.

its all about your opinoin.

we just gotta keep proving that what we do is challenging and worth being recognized.

Nor Cal Cheerleader,

I love this one. We have high school cheer programs coached by are Allstar program. They work just as hard as the Allstars with game squad practice, than comp practices. On the flip side my cheered for Pyramids for two years and everytime Lacrosse season came around at his high school he was in shape and ready to go while the rest needed weeks to get in shape. So it is clear when the anyone tells me cheerleading is not a sport I laugh and tell them that my son is not the one huffing anf puffing on the field. Allstars clearly work just as hard as other sports. Thanks for a fun topic.

i used to be on pop warner and we didnt really work that hard. at the time it seemed like a sport to me but once i got into all star cheerleading i realized that all star cheerleading really IS the sport. i think that high school cheer is a sport if you compete more...i mean if you dont compete, you still are doing skills and stuff but it seems like if you do compete, you have more encouragement to do better. my first year of all star cheer was very hard for me since i had just come from pop warner. we worked really hard all summer long and the great thing was was that i was in shape and it felt really good. like someone else said, you never know if this question will actually be answered and that its mostly about opinion, but in my opinion. if you high school competes and you are on all star cheer, it is DEFINATELY a sport. it's sortof annoying how people say cheerleading isnt a sport, but i could argue about it forever and ever. they just dont know how hard we work! :)

all star cheerleading... what if i were to say i dont believe cheerleading is a sport?

i know how hard cheerleaders work and it has nothing to do with that. i know because i am one, and i put in as much sweat as any other cheerleader does.

The reason why i dont believe cheer is a sport is because one team has no direct affiliation with another teams outcome. i cant go on the floor during another team before and tackle someone doing a double full... haha. like in football, baseball, basketball, they all have opponents who affect their ability to do well. now i know you are all thinking that "well why the hell is swimming, gymnastics, or track and field a sport?" and i believe strongly that if gymnastics or swimming became popular today, it wouldnt be a sport. but its in the olympics, and has been for years... therefore it has to be a sport. it gets excluded from my sport criteria.

now what the hell is cheerleading? not many people have thought about it but cheerleading is actually an extreme sport!! it belongs with skateboarding, snowboarding, and all that good stuff. it wont ever be on the x games but it sure as heck should be. the majority of extreme sports aren't team sports but whatever... we aren't all perfect.

that is why i think cheer isnt a sport. its an extreme sport.

now a whole different subject is what is harder, football or cheer... but I wont get started

Not arguing here but gymnasts don't tackle each other.... golfers don't tackle each other, tennis players don't tackle each other, ice skaters don't tackle each other..... it's been proven that cheer falls in the definition of what "sport" is. So if you can PROVE that something is a sport, and it falls in the definition of a sport, then why do people still say it's not??? Because it's hard to change stereotypes. And unfortunatly, untill actual cheerleaders open their minds, it won't be changed.

My husband is an AVID golfer and even he can tell me that cheer is JUST as much a sport. And he can barely do a forward roll! Trust me, I have seen him try!!!!

Cheer IS a sport in every single sense of the word. Look up the word sport. Look in every dictionary, encyclopedia and the internet. You will see.

According to the Women's Sports Foundation the following criteria has to be met to be considered a sport:

A physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of a mass
A contest or competition against or with an opponent
Is governed by rules which explicitly define the time, space and purpose of the contest and the conditions under which a winner is declared
The acknowledged primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants

Sport - a physical and athletic activity governed by a set of rules including time and space, engaged in primarily for competition. It can be divided up into three categories:

Game sports (i.e. basketball, football, soccer)
Racing sports (i.e. track, cross country, swimming)
Performance sports (i.e. CHEERLEADING, gymnastics, figure skating)

Competitive cheerleading is a sport that is judged on how well a team can tumble, stunt, stay synchoronized, etc...

Now YOU go argue with Websters Dictionary and the Encyclopedia..... I dare ya.

Excellent points.  Cheerleading is a sport. An extreme sport!

And throwing a flyer in the air and catching her, is a much bigger deal than throwing a ball in the air and catching it, by far!  For sure a sport!

My cheer coach will not say cheer is a sport!weirdface He says i wish it was but im not going to lie and say it is because its not. lol He says because the judges give you what ever they feel like giving you and there is no set amount of points for each skill, its not a sport. Like in basketball you get 2 points for each shot, baseball one point for each run, soccer one piont for each goal, and so one. Those are sports. hmm

Do most of you feel that gymnastics is a sport?  I'm not being sarcastic at all.  I'm asking because whenever someone gives their rationale and compares cheer to football, baseball, etc. I think of gymnastics, which gets a whole heck of a lot of respect (Olympics!!!!) Would you say cheer and gymnastics are scored comparably?  i don't have a background in gymnastics nor am I well versed on its scoring system so I really don't know how similar scoring for cheer vs. gymnastics would be.  I searching for input.

Thanks!

If grown men with hairy legs and extremely ugly plaid shorts using a stick to hit a liittle ball around a field of grass is considered a sport I would most definitely consider cheerleading a sport.  Nuff said!

I remember one year in the winter olympics, not too many years ago, the judges for ice skating were told to make sure a particular couple won, so they gave whatever score they felt like giving to the others and made sure they gave the winning couple a high score.   So that argument doesn't hold water.  Since cheerleading is really a combination of gymnastics, acro, and dance, I'm very surprised it hasn't made it into the Olympics yet.  I don't think that's what it would take for it to be considered a sport, but it certainly would help!
