Now I might piss people off with this reply especially coaches but here's my point of view. Prom is a special special memory for High school kids. Cheer is an awesome and a bigg passion for a lot of kids and people. So a lot of them are going to say compeitition. If you chose to go to prom its your choice and your choice alone. Yes you may have commited to your cheer team but did you know prom fell on a comp day when you signed up if yes then you should compete. If not then its your decision. Missing a prom is a huge thing, no other memories will replace that night. Its your overall decision please don't get talked out of going because you think your team mates will be mad. Truthfully if their the teammates they should BE (key word is TEAM) they will understand if you chose prom. Teams should support you in what ever you decide wheather they agree or not there your TEAM!!!! Hope this helps just another perspective
I think your correct in saying that PROM is a big thing, but as a whole many of us miss huge events for cheerleading. People miss weddings, homecomings, vacations, school events and or other important events to be on competitive cheer teams. You make the commitment at the beginning of the season, so you should honor it. To be completely honest, I went to both proms and the actual event was nothing compared to the memories I made with my teams at nationals, bus rides, trip and other things. I speak for myself and no one else saying that. I feel Prom is only one time and cheer will hold lifetime memories.
Well it's a tough decision, and you have had alot of advice!!! But whatever you decide to do, you better atleast decide right away, to be fair to yourself, but mostly your team!!! And which ever you decide to do stick to it, period! Your team deserves that much! Good luck!
You might want to ask your coach or cheer director what the policy is if you choose your prom. Some organizations have writtem policy that you sign at the beginning of the year which states you may be removed from the team and not be allowed to rejoin the next year. Check it out before you make a decision.
Prom - Would you be going with someone special to you (boyfriend who means a lot) or just hanging out with a bunch of friends. You will remember the experience differently based on that fact alone.
Cheer- If you are a flyer you would be putting your team in a much stickier situation than if you were a front spot. Without knowing all the facts it is hard to advise. PLEASE DON'T BE INSULTED, but let's face it some changes are easier to make with stunt groups than others.
I remember watching Worlds 2005 on tv. One of the cheerleaders skipped prom, but brought her boyfriend with her to Worlds. And I think I remember seeing that one team this year had half its members go to prom and then drive out and compete the next day!
A few years back on of the girls on Small All Girl had Prom during USA Nationals. She competed first day and then flew back home to attend prom. Then flew back, I think that night or early next morning and competed again. This was all done with prior approval from the coach. So sometimes there are ways around it.
Depends on the sevarity of the competition. Are you a level 5 senior team going for a world's bid? I agree, your job in a stunt group is also a consideration and what level you are competing in. Front spotting an extension at level 2 is much different that front spotting crazy dismounts on a level 5 team... If you are a flyer, I suggest you make your decission quickly and plan on losing that spot since someone else will have to learn it.
