What is your opinion about parents and coaches drinking at competitions? I was just reading a forum where parents were telling how they sat in a competition and drank and the coaches were drinking as well, and they did'nt see anything wrong with it.As a matter of fact, they encoureged other parents to join them.I for one, feel that a competition is not a place for parents or coaches to drink. There is a place and a time for everything, and a competition were you have so many minor kids is not the place. What is your opinion,am I right or wrong?
There is a USASF rule about this......The rule reads "Athletes and coaches may not be under the influence of alchol, narcotics, performance enhancing substances, or over-the-counter medications while participating in a practice or performance that would hinder the ability to supervise or execute a routine safely."
This was a big issue maybe a year ago, when a competition company offered an open bar during a competition for coaches. Gyms should also have rules like this in place for the saftey of their athletes and the reputation of their gym.
Watching some of the parents drink- I have heard of a drinking game. During the begining of the competition when mini's perform and the later when the other teams perform- every time a Justin Beiber or Katy Perry song is in a routine- they have to drink. It is quite amuzing to watch.
I'm never amused when I see parents or coaches in a drunken stupor at a competition. There's plenty of other opportunities to have fun, such as after the competition has ended for the day. There's a time and place for everything. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with having a ****tail while dining or in the room, as long as it isn't in the presence of the kids and doesn't lead to the inability to make sound decisions for yourself. I think you get my drift.
I have had the unfortunate experience of seeing owners and their friends drunk at awards. The placements did not go as expected and they lit into the YOUTH team in a boozy haze. Needless to say we left that gym. After we left there were some hair raising stories about their behavior around other teams while intoxicated. I think there is a very fine line between enjoying A drink and getting stupid. If you are representing a gym getting stupid is never appropriate.

If a parent wants to drink it is noones business. Coaches, staff, and athletes should never be drinking under in circumstance at a comp. For the coach and staff it's a job, a work place. No Drinking at all for any reason, not even one drink.

i believe its lack of self control!,
people usually drink alcohol for lets say 2 reasons
social- which its not the time in place
stress- if your stressed about your children perform then you probabbly shouldnt be there.and not the way to solve things.
should athletes be alloweed to smoke at competitions? i know its a little off topic. but i had to explain to one of the little ones from my gym. that that athlete was old enough and she was alloweed too? i dont get why would you sit right in front of the doors with 100's of children and just start smoking in uniform.
I don't like when parents drink at comps, but that's up to them. Coaches and athletes never, I know of some that drink with their athletes and it's disgusting, who wants to fly on base that's drunk?!
At American Grand I saw a coach leading her very young team to practice on Friday night with a huge yard long drink and I thought, why are the parents okay with this, put it down and do it later if you must, but when coaches fees are paid by parents, then coaches need to suck it up and be clean and sober until the last award has been given. Then do whatever you want.

ACE isn't perfect by any means. We've had our troubles from time to time, but Happy has done a great job and works hard to make sure everyone knows the expectations.
This was sent out last week before our last regular season competiton this weekend:
Following your teams performance times you are allowed to go enjoy the beach. You are not allowed to drink adult beverages unless it is at dinner. DO NOT be on the beach or at the pool drinking. You will be sent home immediately and will not be allowed to travel next year. (EVEN IF IT IS SUSPECTED) Do not put yourself in a situation to be perceived in that light.
Years ago we left our gym when my 8 year old asked me what a hangover was. She said her coach cut practice short because of a bad hangover. Having said that, I'm ok with parents drinking responsibly during an event, but not coaches. I know it goes on a lot when there are comps in Vegas.

Was that written to the staff and/or parents?
It was part of the competition letter to the staff. Happy always sends out a schedule and competition letter before each event. It's about the only way to communicate to the staff.
ACEDAD- what's your policy about athletes drinking, are the rules different if they are of legal age or not? I feel that it's never okay, whether you are legal or not, someone can get hurt and it can be very serious, I can't imagine someone getting hurt and finding out later that a coach knew someone was under the influence
