I'm not a Cheerleader, but I'd like to cheer in College...help!

I'm 17 years old (girl) and I have one more year of high school left. I want to go to the University Of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and I'd like to be on the cheerleading team.

I used to dance, but haven't for about a year, and I used to take classes at a cheer gym. I think that if I take this last year before college and really get my cheer skills up to par, I can make the team. But I have a lot of questions.

Does UTC's cheer team compete?
Is your tution cheaper if you cheer?
When do you try out for the team, before or after you get accepeted into the school?
How hard is college cheerleading?
Does it take up most of your free time?

Thanks :)

I don't think UTC competes. I think they only do games. I could be wrong though.
I'm pretty sure tuition would only be cheaper if you got a scholarship.
Depending on when tryouts are, I would try to be accepted before tryouts. The tryouts are most likely a set date.
I don't know about UTC, but I'm sorry to say, most college's cheerleading teams are pretty difficult and a lot of times require more than one years experience unless you pick up material, tumbling, and stunting, like extremely quickly.
It will take up a lot of your time. You'll most likely end up with cheer practice + a weight training class. Be ready to wake up at 6 a.m. every day, but if you're not exhausted, you should have a little time for your friends and socializing.

It will take a great commitment on your part, so be ready to dedicate your entire life to cheerleading and being sore 24/7. For the most part though, it's really fun.

I totally agree with PowerExtremeBaby. Since your 17 maybe you should try to find a local all star cheerleading club in your area. All Star Cheerleading will totally help you with college cheerleading. Do you have any tumbling skills by any chance ? If not I would also take a tumbling class. MOST college cheerleading teams require ATLEAST a back tuck. I'm a 16 year and I have been an all star cheerleader since I was 6. Feel free to email me if you want. If you have any questions at all about all star cheerleading or how to get started smile

Here's some UTC info that might be helpful.
