I don't think the legislature should have a say. It is an individual school choice. If schools feel the need to pull cheer because of budget I hope they kill a "boy" sport also. it is always art, music and anything that is for the girls that go first. Rather tragic. I know at my daughters HS Cheer has been a club and the cheerleaders change under the bleachers, they can't use the locker roooms because it is for sports and PE.
Most districts don't fund cheerleading anyway so by dropping they aren't saving any money. At most schools it is a "pay to play" activity. The participants pay for their equipment, camps, bus fees, coaching fees, competition fees and anything else they get during the year. Minus having to pay facility fees it is as expensive as all-star cheer. I doubt VERY seriously that this is an option. Cheerleading within high school is as American as apple pie!
I would not see them doing this anytime soon. Parents pay the Uniform and comps. Parents volunteer at thier game snack booths and fundraise majority of the time. The teachers or coaches do not get paid much and some are all star coaches that love caoching, and volunteer sometimes.
i haven't heard about this until now, but i think it's ridiculous to take cheerleading programs out of california schools..
i cheered in HS and now coach for it, and it brings in a lot of money to the school and we fundraise to make it easier on the athletic department who are too busy trying to find ways to help pay for these football playerss who don't pay a cent all.. so if anything the football, basketball and etc. programs should be taken away.. even though they never would even consider that!
but people have to take a step back and realize how much cheerleading costs.. its not the time and facility that costs money because we can cheer and practice on the grass if thats the case which sometimes we already do!

just my thoughts..
I think your post is interesting. How does cheerleading bring in money to a school since they don't bring in any outside revenue meaning people/fans don't pay to see them at games. They pay to watch basketball, football and baseball. I realize cheerleading teams fundraiser, but schools have to supply a facility, liability and space for cheerleaders to do their activity.
I love cheerleading, just know how the academic world views it.
I would hate to see High School/Middle School cheerleading disappear. It is so great for the athletes to have someone standing behind them.
I also feel like H.S cheerleaders spend a fortune on uniforms and competitions. I could see high school cheer not offering competitions and saving that for All-Star competitors. That way you let the High School cheerleaders cheer and the All-Star gyms would double in size due to the amount of High School Competitive Cheerleaders.
This could be something that would benefit our All-Star Industry if it took place.
H.S uniforms/comps are just about as expensive as all star ones. It often turns out that high school and all star tend to end up at the same compition.. why pay the same prices to be on middle/high school when you could just join a club cheer or all star? Does it really matter??
Cheerleaders are revenue generating? I don't think so. If we asked the community to come to watch the cheerleaders on Friday night without the football or basketball games the turnout would be dismal. Only the parents of maybe 75% of the cheerleaders would be in the stands.
Now if you were to ask the community to show up for a friday night football game you would see so many more fans pay the admission prices for the event. it's not just the parents of the players It's an event for relatives, the kids from other schools, neighboring friends, or just an evening out for someone down the street from the school.
Don't get me wrong it would definitely hurt the whole dynamics of high school if there were no cheerleaders on campus but the school would survive without them.
Cheerleading is quite expensive and I believe cheerleading is the only activity that requires the participants to pay lots of $$$ to participate.
I do believe this needs to change for all the other activities the school provides. For example, If you want to play football, buy your equipment, contribute to the venue costs, help pay for the referees, the security officers, the liability insurance and what ever else it takes to make sure the "game will go on as scheduled". even if you want to participate in the high school band everyone needs to purchase the uniform, the instrument, competition fees and stipends for the band director. You get the idea this would have to apply to EVERY activity in the school.
Everyone needs to pay their own fair share then and only then can the legislature step in and say what activities can continue at the high schools.
I believe the California Legislation should be more concerned about the quality of its teachers, books and facilities. Leave all extracurricular avidities alone. Our kids need these avenues to continue to grow. Support AB 351 and let your legislatures know how you feel!

This may sound awful, but the school's primary duty is to educate. All sports and activites are a luxury, although are good in development are still not a necessity. If the budget was out of control I'm sure parents would step up and pay out of pocket or private activities such as club sports/all stars would grow.
Unfortunately I already do pay out of pocket because the sports my kids do are not prized by the school. So it is Club soccer in the off season and all star cheer instead of school cheer. Expensive but worth the challenge and knowledge that my kids gain. I just think it is ridiculous that with everything else the state is wasting money on they first look at hurting kids.
Just for the record, I agree that the sole purpose of education, is to educate. But athletics is more than just playing a game and a majority of high school sports are in some way funded by the district except cheer. Cheer is solely parent & fundraising based.
What AB 351 is trying to accomplish is about putting the decision back in the hands of the districts and the schools themselves. Did you know that Interscholastic sports, sanctioned by CIF, are eligible for PE credit, while Cheer is not, although we are required to follow CIF rules & regs.
California's Committee on Education has the nerve to say our cheerleaders are not athletes, that they do not work as hard as the interscholastic sports - well I disagree! Our cheerleaders work just as hard as all the other sports but they are not extended the same courtesies?
It's not about money or teachers loosing their jobs, it's about being fair and doing the right thing!
Why is it that when money is tight - it's the kids that suffer?
