So -- school cheer team has a compitition this weekend (last one for the team) they go on at 10:30, awards at 1:00.
Our Gym tryouts are this weekend as well. If we miss tryouts she will automatically most likely be placed on their Junior elite dance (same as this year), This is equivalent to Jr level 5 in the cheer world. Senior team tryouts start at 2:00 -- really wants to tryout for the senior world team (Sr level 5 equivalent) -- but she is only 13 (going into 8th grade). Does she have the skills absolutely.
Do we ask the dance coach -- is there any chance she would even make the sr world team and therefore, we need to bail the comp at 1, forgoing awards and getting to that tryout--
Do we let the cards fall where they may -- knowing that the dance coaches have known and worked with her for 3 years and will place her where she needs to be...
Are we (she/me) even crazy for even thinking this....
See -- this coming year is kind of her last year for all-star -- she wants to be on High school pep or dance squads after this-- so this is probably her only chance to try for a world team...

HELP....
Answer seems easy enough. Finish her commitment with the cheer team and compete and be the only one who leaves before awards. I'm sure this is a first for her so the coaches should understand. Then race over to tryout for her dance which is clearly her passion and GOOD LUCK TO HER. Don't be disappointed if she doesn't make the senior team this time around...she's still young. Both of those teams seem to be very good so either way she's a winner
Def. let her have the oppurtunity to make the senior team. As long as she is there to compete she is not letting her team down. If she misses the tryout, you will wonder all year if she would've made it. GO momma go drive carefully and good luck
As a coach I would be more impressed if the athlete fully finished her prior commitment. When she bounces on her team before awards of the last competition of the year it would only tell me she may do that to me someday.
I understand as parents we want our kids to have everything and every opportunity but sometimes learning to make choices is important.

thanks for the input -- Danny -- hence my dilemma -- they already had rescheduled a comp (for this one) because we were Dallas with NDA(NCA) the same weekend-- so I feel like she should finish the year with her team. Yes we are definetly competing with the team and staying as long as we could (with the team), that was never an option -- its just the awards issue.
Its a solid 30 mintues freeway time from the comp to the gym..
What if she were say 30 ~ 45 minutes late for tryouts -- As a coach/judge conducting the tryouts -- how would you feel (espeically if you knew ahead of time why).
Have you asked the coaches? I am sure her allstar coaches will understand the prior commitment and let her be late for tryouts if she is a solid level 5 cheerleader who would make the team anyway. Lot's of kids come in late in the season and if they are level 5 they make a level 5 team. A little late to tryouts should be no problem. Talk to the coaches before hand and make arrangements.

If a parent came to me and said "I'm sorry but my daughter has a prior commitment to a team and I need to for her to fulfill it. If placing her on a different team than prefered is what you need to do we understand" I personally (can't speak for them) would be impressed and overlook the tardiness.
I'm sure this tryout date wasn't set before you made your commitment to the first team right?
All I know is that when one of my athletes skips out on anything for anything other than an emergency that goes straight into the memory bank. Coaches want commited kids. Fulfilling a commitment to a prior team despite the downside is the right thing to do and the best lesson to teach our kids.

But we are talking about missing awards, not the performance. She will be there to perform, I would think the coach would understand why she wont be at awards. Most coaches are understanding and would appreciate that she was there for the most important part (the performance). It in no way means she is not committed.
Thanks for all the help -- I am meeting with the all-star coach tonight, and then depending on her answer I will talk to the school coach next.... I will let you all know the outcome..
well it was an exiciting weekend -- the JR HIgh cheer team got 3rd out of 9 (much higher than expected). the coaches all around were able to work things out -- we left right before awards, tried out for Senior elite and found out that evening that she had made it.
