Great day for all teams.
1) Special Needs- Just enjoy the spirit they bring to every competition. 2) Youth teams are looking really good this year. 3) Does anyone have the scores for the final session. I love OA TEAMS always looking really awesome. 4) Junior 3 was a tough division with great competition. I thought One Athletics tied with ROYALS.. OA did a really good job. ROYALS did not look as exciting as they usually do, but they still placed 1st. good job.

I know I'm probably in the minority on this, but I don't care. I say let teams celebrate their win the moment they realize it, they deserve it. I don't know of any athletes who are bothered by this; it's typically the parents who get upset because they forget this isn't the scouts, it's a sport, and a competitive one at that. There are plenty of other ways and opportunities to teach good sportsmanship. Don't take away that great feeling athletes have once they know they've won, let them celebrate!

OMG! I thought i was the only one. Why does it matter when you celebrate? If you won you deserve to.

Celebrate when your team's name is called. Let each team have their time to shine as you will get yours as well. If you know your team is going to be called for first.....hold it....then when you hear your name go nuts!
power youth 3 tied with the royal junior 3 and it needed to come down to a tie breaker? can someone anyone give me some clues on the scoresheet. the two routines were completely different. when i heard that the two teams tied it was hard for me to justify this one. this is the royal teams that has been bouncing from junior 3/4 all season right? i still can't believe this out come that a youth team and a seasoned junior team were that close in the results. help me with this one.
then there is the category 4.2. never heard of this one before. The announcer explained the division that the team stunts level 4 but can only tumble level 2. are they just making up divisions? i watched the team in this division the team never did anything level 4. i did see some level 3 skills once in a while but the team definitely wasn't ready for level 3 or level 4 stunting skills. it's really too bad because it was obvious that they were trying really hard.
what was up with all the scratches/no shows at this competition? did the competition host fill the schedule with a bunch of names to make the event look like more teams attended then there really was?
there were some small clubs at this competition. they seem to never get any attention on these boards. what did you think of the small newer clubs do you think they will be around in a year or two?
the automatic bid thing is something to talk about as well. just because a team receives a first through third place they shouldn't get an automatic bid. this is just not for a level 5 team but for every level now that there is the all-level worlds. it's a shame that there can't be a qualifying score with a minimum level of skills sets to qualify with. it just doesn't make sense.
The level 4.2 has been discussed for many months already, I don't know how most people wouldn't know about it.
I agree with the idea of waiting until your team is called to celebrate your first place. However, I also know that there are special circumstances that make it nearly impossible to contain the excitement. If it's a regular thing a team does then I don't believe that's ideal, that being said this is the first time I've heard of Riptides doing this so I believe the excitement of a hard earned win overruled the "we will not cheer until we are called" mantra.
Here's an email that resulted from Jamfest Indy (I put the words pertaining to this in blue and bold):
"Coaches, It seems like the 2008-2009 season just kicked off, but yet I've already been to a dozen NCA/NDA and Varsity Championships. It's exciting to watch our sport continue to grow...it's exciting to watch our coaches become more experienced, our athletes become more advanced, and the routines become more dynamic. I've enjoyed almost every moment of these events.
Yes, I said "almost every moment". There is one aspect of the championships that continues to disappoint me, and that's the awards ceremony. Generally speaking, many athletes in the following two groups would benefit from improving their sportsmanship - the teams that don't win Nationals and the teams that do.
NON-NATIONAL CHAMPIONS:
I miss the days when our cheerleaders were PROUD and ecstatic just to place Top 5 in the Nation, or the days when being one of the Top 2 Teams in the Country was a dream come true. I was lucky enough to be ranked third my last year cheering all-stars. I remember getting off the plane after that trip and calling all my friends and family members to tell them about this huge accomplishment. I was on the THIRD BEST CHEERLEADING SQUAD IN THE NATION.
I really don't see that today. For the most part, I see utter devastation. As a competitive coach, I realize the importance of training a team to 'win' and to strive for first place. It's in doing so that we tap into an athlete's true potential. While they may not always be fortunate enough to land in the top spot, they at least train like a champion and will continue to improve and progress. We need to revive the notion that it is OK to be proud of 2nd place.. or 3rd place... or 4th place or 5th place.
Teams shouldn't just celebrate the ranking at that particular event, they should celebrate the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice it took to get where they did. We can't ignore the message being sent. There's a right time to take a hard look at what could have been done better, but I don't think it is at the competition. Everyone benefits from celebrating what teams accomplish and enjoying their time spent at any competition - parents, kids, and coaches. Parents will see positive attitudes, solid life lessons, good work ethics, and decide this sport is where their kids should stay.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS:
On the flip side, teams fortunate enough to win 1st place aren't giving 2nd place their due respect. At every event, when the 2nd place team is called out, the winning team is so quick to begin their celebration that the moment of glory for the 2nd place team is lost. Teams who place 2nd in the nation deserve to celebrate their huge accomplishment with the crowd. This is the standard award ceremony behavior we have bred as coaches. Our challenge to the National Champions is to WAIT for the 2nd place team to be recognized, congratulated, and celebrate before you begin your own celebration. It shows discipline, self-control, and appreciation for your competitors.
This sport is something we're all proud to be part of. The life lessons that come along with all-star cheerleading will stay with these kids long after they've retired from our sport. Remember that sportsmanship starts with us. At NCA, we'd love to be part of this project and we challenge every coach to 'step up their game' and step up their sportsmanship.
For those of you that will be at our All-Star Nationals next month, good luck in your final weeks of preparation. We look forward to celebrating this competition season with you.
Agree to disagree on this one. It ties into the notion that our sport needs to be treated with sensitivity because it isn't a sport like other sports, which is ridiculous. We can't have it both ways. I would like examples of other sports where once a first place winner is determined they hold back on their celebration to let the teams who did not win have their chance to shine. Then I may see it differently. You want your chance to shine? Then win.
Couple of comments about the competition yesterday...
1) Love the venue seating. Hated the venue lighting (not good for photography/videography) 2) Why in the world are they scoring/placing special needs teams? Does that really need to be competetive? 3) Disapponted with all the level 5/6 performances (except Power International). While they are always exciting none of them were clean. BTW, congrats to the AO Sm Sr 5 and their coaches, they really are stepping up. 4) Where is all the Level 5 competition. Really, one Jr (Power), one International (Power), and two Sm Sr (Power, One Athletics). Why are other gyms not putting Level 5 teams on the mat? Used to be that everyone would stick around to see the Level 5 squads duke it out at the end of the day. Yesterday, by the time the Sm Sr 5 and the Open Internation squads took the mat the auditorium was about 1/3 full. Seems it is all about the stiff competition at Level 3 these days.

They are doing it at the request of the USASF Special Needs Committee. Some event producers have agreed (Cheersport, NCA, UCA), but most just allow exhibition.
Special Olymics has been placing athletes for more than 40 years. We've discussed it with most of the special needs coaches around the country and hundreds of special needs parents. More than 80% of the ones I've talked with are in favor of scoring.
Regarding the lack of Level 5 Teams. Because of the economy there are fewer parents able to provide for these type of extra-curricular activities. There are also a limited number of qualified tumbling coaches...

I also believe its the drilling of "if you don't have a full squad with a triple toe back or a full squad that can throw running fulls, don't put a level 5 team on the floor". we have heard this for the past few years and now this is the result. Teams are dropping down to level 4 even though they have cheerleaders that can throw fulls. Teams are continuing to drop further and further down the levels because we have been told this. don't get me wrong there are still gyms out there that still buck the system and push their teams to the next level but there are only a handful of teams that do so. It's time to change the score sheets to allow teams to try the next level and be competitive. you don't need to be a bunch of olympic gymnasts to still stunt, jump, and dance like a the next level, where ever your teams may be now.

You nailed it right on the head. In order to score within a certain range. you have to have majority elite tumbling and many gyms don't have the numbers to do that.

Completely agree. Gymnastic routines are boring. Perhaps at the Olympic level we can all appreciate the level of skills but ever see a level 5 gymnastics meet? Nothing against gymnastics but even they would agree, because its all about the skills it gets repetitive.
I'd love to see judges give more points for creativity, appeal, stunting ability and flow of a routine rather than worry about if every kid can triple jump tuck. Stop counting the skills and start enjoying the routine.
