Definitely not a math genius.

Take out a calculator, and you can find out that $85 billion divided by 200 million people equals $425/person......NOT $425,000/person.

Yes, but the Federal bail out is $850 billion, not $85 billion. Some estimates put it over a trillion.

Sadly that is correct. It's such bad timing, trying to pass a very risky bill right before a major election that is right around the corner. My guess is it won't pass unless/until the fears of the economy going further south are realized. There are some who feel there isn't a need to rush into this, and maybe they're right... time will soon tell!

In light of today's events I hope that this question doesn't sound shallow: I'm just wondering how many are weighing whether or not to discontinue cheer this year? It's a catch 22 because so much has been paid to date. But, speaking for myself, I'm really afraid of the commitment that remains over the next few months - travel, hotel, etc. My child isn't on a World's team but I can't imagine trying to scrape up that money right now. It's hard enough trying to keep up, scarey waiting for all to agree on the plan to help the economy catch up, and lastly - worrisome thinking about the fact that we might have to give up on cheer.

Your thoughts...or better, any words of encouragement?

Probably too early to tell, but I would think we would have a good sense of what direction things are going towards in the weeks ahead. If financial situations get bad maybe gyms can stick to local competitions, make some adjustments to keep families from having to drop the program.

This is part of the Reason that Airborne has pulled back on the traveling schedule this season. We heard from our coaches that they are trying to do what is right for us. We of course ( are kids more then us) are upset about not traveling as much but I know that my family could not afford the big travel schedule if it was the same as last season.

Have any other programs scaled back? With the economy the way it is, it is hard to make the extra pinch for the trips.

We canceled Cheersport which was a big travel trip for us.

So it is a great comp. Go next year. Why would it be so bad to not have the people from cali representin. When it comes to making choices the climate has changed, it is hard to justify this over priced sport. Cheer is low on the scale of things to keep or let go.

I have a feeling that if the economy stays as is or continues its decline then the cheerleading world will adjust. Look for competitions closer in the area, specifically northern california and southern california, to become the new "Cheersport", "Dallas", "Indy" competitions of California.

I think programs will also cut down their travel as well. Gyms want to make it affordable so that they can remain in business.

So which competitions in California do you think will become the new big competitions?

Gyms/Teams have already done this over the past few years. The only teams that travel to the east coast are big name programs. The average gym goes to the same events every year. Jamz Nationals, American Showcase, USA Nationals, Spirit Sports, and GSSA Nationals.

I would throw Athletic Championships in there too, it looks like a very good turnout this year. I'm for less out of town trips too, it would save us so much money. I know our teams would be just as satisfied doing well against many of the gyms in our area. Think about it, aren't they the teams you really want to try to win against? We don't really need to travel five to eight hours to go against teams we've never heard of. Just the opinion of a parent trying to save money however possible.
