Ive been asked to help establish the USASF/IASF Parents Action Committee. It will be chaired by Valerie Ninemire (editor of Cheer Coach and Advisor) and include Matt McDonough (IASF Communications Director) and Terri Presson (Cheer2WinAgain on ProX).
The relationship between the parents and the USASF needs to grow & improve. For this to happen and for all entities within the USASF membership (event producers, gyms, coaches, athletes & parents) to harmoniously exist, there must be some boundaries and protocol.
Lets find out how to eliminate the "us" and "them" feeling the parents have for the USASF. This will only inspire "angry mob" actions or "hearsay" group thinking that can only be detrimental.
Here is what we're thinking for the groundwork for a better process. This will help us start working towards 08-09.
Step 1. Reconnaissance
I need to gather the names of those parents who are passionate, concerned, and want to be involved. Please email me at bill.presson@gmail.com.I only need your name and your gym at this time.
In the interest of being as transparent as possible- were just going to start with gathering this information. Once we have a good list together, we can get some preliminary surveys out. These will help us discover the varying levels of involvement by the parents, and get us an idea of the structure needed to keep everyone informed.
Step 2. Boundaries -
What are the items that Parents need to, and are best suited to address?
What are the major concerns that affect all parents?
Some initial thoughts on some major areas - Sexual Predators Ethics & Sportsmanship Scholarship
Step 3. Protocol What are the best methods to collect and present concerns?
As I mentioned, we're only trying to gather interest at this time. So, you can email me at bill.presson@gmail.com.
This is a giant step forward. What will the involement of the parents be? Must you belong to a gym at the time that you express interest or are you specifically looking for parents who will serve as voices for their gym and parents? More details please?
Thanks AceDad. We're lucky to have such a passionate parent taking the lead. You get an extra point cause you're a Dad!
I would love and would appreciate any opportunity to become as involved in this undertaking as alllowed. I think the relationship between event host and the parents certainly can and should be improved. Thank you, this is long overdue and very welcomed!!!
Currently, we're just trying to gauge interest. If you have any interest at all, just send me an email. There is no commitment at this point and we aren't sure how much time will be involved. We're just trying to determine if there are 10 parents or 100 interested.
Our assumption is that it would be parents whose children are currently involved with an all star gym, but if that's not the case, go ahead and email me anyway. We'll work on some of those details later.
This is AWESOME!! I hope there are enough parents who want to be involved to keep this going. I know that we like to complain, but often don't want to spend the extra time helping to do anything to change it - no I'm not just talking about cheer.
Just what us kids want parents sticking tha nose where it dont belong Let us enjoy our activity without you being so noseeeeeeeeeeee
What is it about this committee that you are so opposed to? That they are trying to keep sexual predators from being coaches? That they are wanting to keep coaches/athletes sober while competing?
I think this committee will only make it more enjoyable and safer too.

If you are in this sport for the party then get out and work at a night club. If you are a teenager and you are drinking at competitions I dont want you in my gym. Get over yourself, your parents pay for this and drive you everywhere and get you to the comps. Have some thanks for them hoping that you are in a positive enviroment. Seriously.
As an update: so far, we have 49 volunteers from all over the US. We'll probably continue to accept names for a few more days. Then we'll start to organize and determine the areas in which to concentrate our efforts.
I sent out the welcoming email this afternoon. If you had asked to be involved and didn't get the email, please send me a private message or email me your name and gym to bill.presson@gmail.com.
ACEDAD, I hope it is not too late to be on the list. I did send you an email with the information you were requesting, but only this morning. Thanks again for taking this VERY IMPORTANT subject on.
