Thats right, the largest public university in the country with over 66,000 students has cut it's cheer program completely. The lovely Lisa Love, current ASU Vice President for University athletics and former Director of Athletics at USC is behind this terrible decision.
It was announced Wednesday evening, April 30th, that ASU's Marketing Department has decided to CUT THE CHEER PROGRAM completely. They will have NO cheer squad next year at ANY football, basketball or other sporting event games. Nor will they the competitive squad that they have had from years past. Instead, they have decided to "merge" with the DANCELINE creating a "spiritline" with dancers and guy "yell leaders." Think USC. The only form of "cheer squad" that will remain are the megaphones and signs. They will not even be called the cheerleaders, but instead "Sparky's Crew" which will be entirely male.
There will be NO PLACE for true female cheerleaders who want to stunt and tumble but only a place for girls with a dance background. No offense to the USC pommies...but those girls are in no way shape or form cheerleaders...or even technical dancers...they just do sideline chants with giant poms. Obviously, Lisa Love wants this type of "look for ASU" and to only have the female athletes out there looking pretty rather than doing anything truly athletic such as cheerleading. I am absolutly appalled at how the ASU athletic department has made this abrupt decision and gone from a nationally ranked coed team (USA D1 Champs in 2006) to a mere spirit squad. I can't imagine that the current dance line is too pleased as they too are a very strong technical dancers and being forced to be like the USC pommies is far from the image the dance line has long struggled to create for themselves.
I have posted a link below directly to the ASU Spirit Crew Page for more information....Just wanted to hear some feedback on what you all think about this decision.
That's too bad. I wonder if any of the kids had cheer scholarships? That just goes to remind those kids considering attending a university, to select the school based on academics first.
That's really dumb ! Cut a whole cheer program .... for what ? Lisa love is dumb for that one people cheer beacuse they love this sport and obssesed with it but to cut a cheer program ? If you dont like the Dance program why not cut them ! ? Hmmm ....

1 Photo of 6 ASU cheerleaders taken 2 years ago is not reason enough to disband an entire program. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,353953,00.htm
ASU football players have committed rape and murder, yet the football program has not been terminated.
In 2006 a lawsuit was filed against ASU regarding a student who was raped by ASU football player Darnel Henderson. She sued the school because of their lack of protection. Henderson was merely suspended from the team for 2 weeks. *The Basketball program was not terminated*
In 2005 Loren Wade a running back for ASU shot and killed a Brandon Faulkner, a former ASU Defensive Back outside a club in Tempe. Wade was dismissed from the team. *The Football program was not terminated*
From an article appearing 9-12-93 in the ( www.azcentral.com ) Arizona Republic Newspaper:
(1) ASU Varsity Basketball Players Dwayne Fontana, Lynn Collins, Stevin Smith*, and Jamal Faulkner - all pleaded guilty to illegally charging $13,474 to an ASU credit card issued to an assistant coach. (2) ASU Basketball Player *Jamal Faulkner*, violated his terms of a two year parole by failing to keep appointments with his probation officer and for failing to perform 100 hours of court-mandated community service work. (3) ASU Basketball Player Ian Dale, pleaded guilty to sexual assault on a public street.
Crazy how the football players and basketball players can commit criminal offenses yet 6 cheerleaders take 1 photo in their underwear and the entire program is terminated. I guarantee if this were 6 men on the football team in their boxers no one would care. I hope a lawsuit comes from this!

What a really bad decision on the University's part in my opinion. Well we all know the crazies are in California and migrating to other parts of the country spreads the crap we already have. True, USC does have their song girls and all male cheer team, but they also have a competitive dance team as well. Maybe ASU will start a competitive CLUB style team instead, similar to Flordia schools. Just another reason for West coast Cheerleaders to travel east.

Agree with the double standard you point out, however, many pictures have been posted and many of the cheerleaders @ ASU, have, for many years been known to be wild and inappropriate. It's too bad the whole program is being cut but maybe cutting the program is preventing something horrible.

You know something. i have seen these type of pictures from girls from the local high school cheer squads that surround my area. heck, I have seen jr. program cheerleaders posing in their spankies. Now I don't approve of these types of pictures but my point is that the jr program and high school these girls are minors. They are not in college. These college girls are ADULTS. This is down all over the country. I could bet money that EVERY college team - volleyball, basketball, softball, track, and cheer have pictures just like this one. So, are we all going to stop sports all together. Come on people it's really time to focus on bigger issues.
EXACTLY! These women are adults...to be quite honest, those photos didn't show one inch more then their bikinis in the 2006-2007 ASU Cheer & Dance Calendar...as a matter of fact the pic with the 6 of them was actually posed just like one of the pictures in the calendar.
The Marketing Department at ASU (which oversees the cheer program) had no issues with the calendar and used it to fill their pockets. Yet, if provocative photos of the girls are being taken without them (ASU Marketing) making a profit then they are not happy. The department claims these photos are not what they want representing ASU but yet they exploited these women in a swim suit calendar less than a year ago.
How does this make sense!? I will try and post a few photos of the calendar ASAP so you all can see what Im talking about.
I think the "reason" was a complete cop out! I am all for maintaining an image, but look at the other examples given. Call me crazy, but I think that someone committing murder is a just a tad (dripping in sarcasm) worse than a picture of girls in underwear that is covering more than many bikinis. And if the women are consistently behaving in inappropriate ways, remove them from the team as it happens, replace them with new cheerleaders. It won't take long before people get the hint and start changing their ways.

Don't believe reports you may have heard in other media outlets that the ASU cheer squad is being disbanded because some of the girls showed up in racy photos on the internet.
The racy photos part is true, but ASU assistant athletic director Steve Hank says the cheer squad is not being cut.
"The two issues are completely unrelated. And what we're doing is we are just combining the cheer squad with the dance squad for the purpose of coordination, communication and to enhance the game day experience.
Hank says that move was in the works for awhile, and most of the girls that appeared in the pictures are former cheerleaders anyway.
Bottom line, you will still see cheerleaders at all the games rooting on the Devils

Thanks for posting this. I hope this is accurate. Do you have a link to this report?
