Life will be easier for you, if you stay on Disney property.  But, the trip will be less expensive, if you stay off property.  Most of the kids will be at the Allstar resorts or possibly Pop Century.  I would go for one of those if you want to be near your child.  Of course, if you enjoy quiet, then you may want to explore some of Disney's other hotels.  I personally, love staying in the thick of things, so Allstar is always my first choice if we are visiting Disney for cheer.
