nope not us -- I did peruse the list (no California teams that I saw)
Pom back east is very different than POM at west. For POM back east -- think cheer dance section on steriods. Western POM is more what they call "Variety" where they take 4 distinct styles of dance (jazz, hip hop, pom, and kick) and combine it into 1 dance. In POM you are scored all on arms pom movement etc. In Variety it is more the "dance technique" -- In cheer terms -- the tumbling and how "correct your postion is in the actual tumbling of the pass.
There are very few teams back east that do "variety". Jazz is big and there are a few powerhouses back there -- Planet Dance, Indiana Dance force (niceest sweetest girls around) -- great POM and 360 dance.
However that being said -- Rosary HS (so cal girls catholic HS) got 2nd out of 40 teams in the POM large Varsity section and Los Alimitos HS - SM varisty POM (from So Cal) got 3rd from UDA 2 weeks ago and Los Alamitos HS won their JAZZ category out of 25 team (toppling Carlsbad HS (another CA HS).
Agreed! I think Pom in California is basicaly Jazz with poms. I wish more California teams were sharper in their arm placements, then they would place higher nationally, not just West Coast competitions. Although Los Al, and a few other schools do place well , it would be more consistent. I love the UDA style of dance.
I like how you compared the two styles of pom. Like cheer-dance pom and variety-type pom. Do you think particular companies have a style of pom that they like better?
Actually yes and they do have different categories. What gets difficult is when they lump the 2 together. USA -- just has a POM division. They don't distiguish between the two and they tend to like it more "pom" ish.
Then there are some companies that have a Variety division, and then some call it Pom/Dance and Pom/Song with the Pom/Song for the beginner teams. And they you get Americian championships that call it "Combined Style" and then "Pom" with no novice/advanced levels.
