Individuals this year

Are their any organizations going to have their cheerleaders do individuals this year?  It seems like this is fading out.  I am assuming it does not drive enough revenue to have them.  Can anyone tell me if your gyms is going to offer individuals and if so where are they going to.

I hope it is fading out.  I love to watch the stunts though, but the individuals come on.  I do not care for gyms that allow this because it singles individuals out and causes drama and if Sally does not win then it's really hard to watch.  Put your child in pageants instead.  This is just my view so moms don't get all awwcrazy on me

I think individuals are a great thing!!  It gives a child a chance to shine.  If they have the talent and want to show it off then thats ok with me!!

Individuals are great, it gives the girls something fun to do and show their great moves and skills. I really liked the COA competition last year. They had specialty individual divsions like Power Jumper and Power Tumbler in addition to the individual dance and cheer. We had a few girls that participated and they had fun not to mention they were adoreable!

Yep, agreed and my opinion as well, put you child in a pageant or soloist in dance if they want to shine. Cheer is a team sport.

It's funny when people dont have the talent they put down others and the things they like to do.  Whats wrong with others showing the talent that they have?  I dont see anything wrong with it.  Look at Kiara Nowlin that's why we all know her becuase of her solos.  She is amazing!

Ok Kiara is amazing but how any times are you preaching to your teams that cheer is a TEAM sport not an individual how many big name gyms or even small successful gyms do you see out there with individuals???????? hmmmm none really and i wonder why because individual cheerleading highlights one individual on your teams and it build anomosity within the squads.  really individuals was a thing ofthe past and it is for cheer gyms that need to highlight thier star because they are lacking somehwere else.  although i do have to say airvorne has amazing teams and they dont need to have individulas because thereteams speak for themselves.

but lets practice what we preach to the girls on our squads it is a team sport.

it is what it is period a team sport

I have to agree. Cheerleading is a team sport. However, I disagree when said that Individuals are a sign of a team lacking something. I cheered for Top Gun my HS years, and NEVER because I was the star or because my team was lacking something. Simply because it was fun and my coach wanted me to get experience and get my name out there. So, though cheerleading is a support, Individuals allows the cheerleaders to show their own style and personality on the floor. What's the harm? Look at Kiara . Perfect example of a great Individual who's team is not lacking anything. She's simply having fun and getting her name out there. Im sure tons of scholarships will soon follow. Bladez will also be having Individuals this season. GOOD LUCK to all Individuals this year!!!

I also don't think anything is wrong with them, I don't personally enjoy sitting through them, but that doesn't make them wrong.  I think it's also good for the cheerleader that may be on a level lower than her/his ability to still be able to throw some of those skills they can't in the routine.

I think cheer is a team sport.  I have seen some gyms put the kids in individuals because it is a coach or team moms child.  The parents are just trying to live through their kids.

i think some individuals are fun to watch. i obviously dont think that a tuck cuts it anymore for youth junior and senior divisions but if the kids have fun doing it let them. I am also unbothered by individuals if they are before the team competitions start or they are the day before because then nobody really has to sit through them except the people who really want to see them. JMO. Cheerleading is a team sport however crowdleading and spiritleading dont have to be. I also dont mind power tumbling or jumps because they are pretty fast competitions. JMO.

okay here is another perspective ---
it could be said that dance divisions are a team sport -- they work, practice, sweat, and perform as a team -- right -- But yet, solos's in dance are very prevalent. Not so much in "all star" although they are there, but at "studio competions", you will have girls do 2 or 3 different solos in different genres' (jazz, tap, ballet, etc). hour after hour after hour. How is that different then, say a girl wanting to do a solo in cheer?

I have found that doing a solo, builds character, self-esteem, responsibility, leadership, and role model qualities. Scary (for the girl) absolutly. You can't blame "sally" for messing up, because your the only one out there. But, they stisfaction of going out infront of a huge group of people and performing takes a lot of chutspha (sp?). That in turn also shows a girl how important being a team member is.

how many girls would love to be Kiara? how many girls have progressed their skills afer seeing Kiara. Now, if Kiara had never solo'd, who would know who she is. who would care, she is just another team member.

I think that the girls that have to courage and comitment to perform solo's and indivudals should be commended on their accomplishment, and encouraged to continue. You never know what little tiny or mini is out there watching that girl and thinking to herself, WOW if I work hard and practice a little harder, maybe one day I can go out there and do that.

Now from the parents persepctive (-- its a pain, its costly, it can be crazy a hassle and just plain exasaberating) -- but the 1 time your kid comes off the floor after a solo with a huge grin on her face because she did her personal best -- (reguarless of winning or losing) is payback 200% and worth all of the tears, heartache support, and extra mile we have to go through. Believe me -- I know....

Cheerleading is a team sport, you shouldn't single individuals out, it creates animosity yadayadayada.

You know what lets get rid of MVP, Slam Dunk Contests and the Heisman Trophy too.

It must create horrible animosity when multiple people from the same team go for it and only one gets the gold.
It doesn't generate pride in a team or program or anything.
