Looks like an interesting competition. Royals & Odyssey are squaring off in quite a few categories! LOVE Starstruck's hip hop team. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE.
They are new I think. I looked them up as they went to the 1st Jamz Competition at Marine World. Their uniforms are purple and black. And they have several teams from what I see. Does anybody know where they are from?
The open division is a loop hole for smaller gyms that can't field a senior team with the new age requirments. They can have any age on their senior team.

I don't consider it a loop hole. It's a legal option for smaller gyms that's all. A gym may have a younger cheerleader with more advance skills, and instead of placing her/him on a younger team, they can compete on a team at the correct skill level. Also I know of some larger gyms that compete open also.
I didn't mean "loop hole" to be a negative statement. All I was saying is that when the new rules on ages came out everyone was freaking out, especially smaller gyms because they had younger girls on their senior teams and they didn't have enough older girls in the gym with higher skill levels. I am just saying that with every rule there is always a loop hole or alternative way of going a different way (a positive for everyone!). And I know it's a legal rule, never said it wasn't legal.
But when you think about it, what is the point of coming out with standards if a competition is going to allow an OPEN category where you can get around them? Typically these open categories have little to no competition. Why not make the adjustments at your gym? Put your talented under 10 on a junior team. If they can't utilize their skills, that's the way it goes sometimes. Maybe he/she could compete as an individual or in a small stunt group.
I don't see anything wrong with competing open. You could argue that dropping someone down to a lower level that they clearly are above is not right also. I hear alot of complaints about that on this board. Go for it if it works for you and your gym.
Does anyone know if the "open" division is temporary to help gyms transition over the next few years while they raise the minimum age for Sr division? So, say maybe a year or so after they finish raising the minimum age (12 right?) they might do away with the "open" division. I don't see anything wrong with having the open division, but I don't really see the point of continuing to have both divisions long term, either.
Since it seems this is brought up because of Cheer Odyssey and California Spirits Senior 3 Open teams heres some questions.
1. How many girls on the team make it a Open team, in other words how many girls under 10 are on this team?
In the case of Cal Spirits Senior 3 team, assuming they have really strong Level 2 skills, why not put them on the Youth 2 team and let them really show off the strong Level 2 skills and work great combo passes. In the case of Cheer Odyssey assuming these girls on the Senior 3 Open have tucks, why not bump them up to Junior 4 and have them work layouts. The transition from a tuck to a layout is not to difficult. Just some questions I am sure people are thinking.
I just don't like the whole open division thing. It is really going to split up the divisions and provide for less competition in some divisions. Just my 2 cents!

I think the reason that Cheer Odyssey is going open is because they have one male on their team. Does that make sense? I'm not sure all of the rules I am just taking a guess at it. Maybe someone can fill me in.
Cheer Mama, I don't mean to put you down as you do seem to be a very knowledgeable parent, but I have a slight problem with one of your comments.
"The transition from a tuck to a layout is not to difficult."
-In reality, yes it is. Unfortunately, in this day and age of cheerleading, you rarely see a layout that is technically correct. Now, if you land on your feet and your legs were straight it's considered a layout.
Incorrect layout technique is a big reason why many kids injure themselves doing full twisting "layouts".

I'm sorry maybe I should rephrase that. The transition to doing a tuck to a layout is difficult in learning and working. What I meant is It is faster to go from a tuck to a layout than from nothing to a backhandspring,or a layout to a full. I did not mean there is no reason whay they shouldn't have it. If all of the standing skills are there and the girls need to work on layouts I think alot of tucks are thrown at Level 4 and it would be great for them.
