Since we are now anonymous -

what gyms out there have rivals?

We don't need to start slinging dirt, but what teams have gyms in their area that they consider rivals - gyms that truly have beef - don't get along

I know we will all say every gym is our competition, rival if you know what I mean, but there are gyms where it is much more personal

Please lets not be cheesy and say that we love all gyms

Don't remember what the teams were but didn't two gyms get into some sort of confrontation last year at America's Best in Sacramento? I would say they are rivals.

Last year my gym had a rival with a gym that was really close to us. Like within 5 minutes. We had a few people that had left their gym to come to ours. Neither of us were really famous in the all star world I guess you could say, but we usually beat them at comps but they had some people with really good potential. But the funny thing is that the girls that left to come to our gym still had friends on the other team so at comps they'd run over to each other and hug so it all seemed very friendly smile

A lot of times I think it has more to do with the owners or coaches then it does with the actual cheerleaders

Interesting thought...please elaborate!

I just mean I have never really seen cheerleaders arguing or giving attitude at competitions however I have seen coaches or owners doing so. When  a cheerleader changes gyms I have not seen her old teamates give her attitude or shun her and vice versa - except in extreme cases.  I think it really comes down to owners and coaches setting the example be it a bad or good one.

I agree, I have seen coaches start the "drama" between rival gyms. Its not always a bad thing to have a little friendly competition in your area, but when it comes down to bad mouthing other gyms is when I think it becomes out of control.

I don't see how this topic can come of any good or be of any interest except to stir up past incidents.   Here's a suggestion, how about we talk about what makes for a rivalry instead of naming specific gyms?   What I have found is that gyms in the immediate area of others tend to be rivals because they are competing as businesses trying to get as many members/customers as possible.   I've also found that gyms who have been around for a while (five years or longer) tend to have respect for one another knowing how difficult it is to stay successful.   Just my observations.

Some gyms are just rivals plain in simple.  Gyms that have been around for more than 5 or more years it makes no difference.  I agree that sometimes it is the owners or coaches that cause or stir up these feelings, and pass it along to the teams.   I've seen it first hand and no I'm not going to name the gym.  I think it mostly stems from thier competing for business in the same area and feeling threaten.   I know it's hard sometimes but you can't lower yourself to that level.  You just need to be the better person/team and not let yourself get drawn into the drama.  I'm a strong believer in karma and all that negativity eventually comes back to haunt you.

Yeah, it is funny to me when you think your gym takes the high road and another gym is made out to be a monster - then you step back and look at it... and you aren't so sure that your gym wasn't stirring it just as much if not more than the other gym.

Oh Gosh! Here we go.

All I can say, "yes" there are rivals. No doubt about it. Some of those rivals are out for all to see and then those are the rivals that are typed about on this website.

However, there are some really strong rivals that are riding an under current. These rivals are between some extremely successful gyms. These gyms have been around for years. The owners know, how to play the game, get inside scoop on their rival, and will try to one up the rival everytime.

So, the next time you see those "powerhouse" gyms shake hands, are they really wishing each other "Good Luck" or are they trying to figure out what their opponent will do next?

This topic could get really ugly. However, I do agree with the poster that said it's often the coaches and or gym owners that make it a so called "rival" situation. A gentle reminder to the coaches and gym owners for this season. Your athletes and parents will mimic your behavoir. So, if you are talking smack about another gym or being rude to people at comps ....  so will your athletes.

Best of luck to all the gyms this season.

I disagree, I find the girls start drama when their friends are on other teams or they watch teams during competitions. Coaches do not help it when they even entertain listening, but I find kids and some parents even start soem of the drama. Always talking about other gyms. when will people realize that every gym takes time to get better. Teams like CA, WC were built over the past 10-12 years, even POWER took a LONG time to build.

There were two gyms, until one gym went under and sadly instead of the other gym picking up the buisness, only maybe three kids, and I beleive one coach decided to go over to the other gym. Sadly because this rival was kept ongoing by the coaches, parents, and kids this gym missed out on a lot of buisness and a very good oppurtunity to become a huge force in there community, and the kids from the other gym missed out on having a place to continue to cheer. Both sides lost out. So rivals harm everyone, especially the kids.

I dont see any problem in having rivalries with other gyms as long as they are in the spirit on good clean competition. I think every professional sports team to local high school has a rival that you jut want to beat.   I mean who doesnt wan to beat their local rival who has an outstanding winning record.  As long as youre not being ugly about it as an athlete, coach or spectator I believe is ok to want to beat the best especially if its a local rival.

I think in the All Star cheer world rivals can be easy to keep at a fun and clean level....as far as h.s. Rivals...well that goes a little deeper and usally has been going on a lot longer than some of us we're born!! They can be a little scary at times!!

one thing that is so ironic is that LAST year (not anymore being that they wont compete against eachother i dont think at least) but NCE and Motions were big rivals being the only two large coed teams in northern california and being about 2 miles apart from eachother. but what makes it funny is that Serrell one of there athletes last HATED me. i mean hated hated me. and now he is probably one of my best friends being on the same team in southern california. its funny how things like that work out. we laugh about it now, and both admit we didnt like eachother.

I know in Northern California many teams consider POWER their rival. I knew I had seen something last year about rivalry but couldnt find it. The teams at POWER should feel honored that people actually post on their Myspaces that they beat them. Also I remember there being one between South Bay/NCE and Motions. I found this though it seems to be a healthy rivalry.

Starstruck beat POWER

My daughter found this yesterday on her friend from starstrucks myspace page that had this saying as a quote

"Pair of shoes $20,
Clothes $10,
Beating power cheer
PRICELESS!!!"

Being on NorCal...i would say there has always been a rival between us and Motions. But it's healthy. i have a lot of friends on Motions..and we always hang out and say hi at competitions..but once i step on that mat its competition time. Whether we win or not...i'm still friends with them...

but not gunna lie...it does feel nice to win :)
and i'm disappointed we wont have the chance to compete against them this year.
