I will be traveling from So cal to San Francisco on business in September. I want to leave a few days early and take a much needed rest before Cheer competitions start. I will also have my 20 year old son with me who has been very ill for the past several months and I think the trip will be good for him. Any advice on any nice and resonable hotels or Bread and Breakfast Inns that you like? I love the Ocean and the Forests...... Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
I live in Pacifica about 20 minutes south of San Francisco on the coast. There are several hotels here that are near the beach and are probably less expensive than staying in the city. We have Best Western Lighthouse Hotel, Holiday Inn Express and Pacifica Beach Resort. I think there is also a Days Inn. A cheaper option would be the Howard Johnson's but it is not on the beach probably about a 1/2 mile or so. Just south of us about a 1/2 hr is Half Moon Bay which will have Bed & Breakfast Inns. You are picking a great time to come because our best weather is in September and October. Have fun!
Big Sur may be a bit out of your way, but there is a little place named "Fernwood Resort" that has a rustic little hotel (with hot tubs!) and also some tent cabins. It is located in the forest, right by a creek with a short hike to the beach. To me (who doesn't fully enjoy camping) it is the perfect in-betweener.
I satyed in Big Sur this past christmas, it was amazing beautiful Perfect combination of woods with amazing beaches to visit. I don't think you can go wrong there!

Where did you stay? It sounds perfect!!!!
We stayed at Big Sur campground and cabins. We had a nice big cabin overlooking the river. It was winter time, but it was absolutley beautiful. There is was also a larger campground/hotel just up the way that was very nice. We went for a hike to a waterfall at that location and stopped in at the gift shop.
CheeRacerMom wrote:Hi CheerRacerMom, Just wanted to let you know I'll be staying at the Lighthouse Hotel on Sept 16 for a couple of days. Thanks for your suggestion. I am looking forward to a much needed relaxing stay. Then I'll be headed to San Jose and Stockton to teach some classes. Another question for you. Is Alcatraz worth taking the time to go see? I'd like to do a couple of things while I'm in the area. Of course, I may be up in the area in November for the Jamfest Comp. This winter I think we're going to take Bladezmom's advice and stay in Big Sur.......

Glad you will be visiting my little town. A great place to eat is across the street from the Lighthouse.. Nick's Restaurant. They have great breakfasts, sandwiches and dinner. It is a bit pricey but you are sure to get a great meal and an awesome view especially at sunset. Another good place to eat is Rock n Robs a 50s diner type of place which is next door to the hotel.
Alcatraz is a fun place to visit but you should book reservations ASAP. My daughter had a bunch of friends come for a visit to do the night tour and they were all sold out. Other fun things to do are of course Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, Ocean Beach and the Cliff House, or a trip down to Half Moon Bay that has a nice little downtown area. Also about 1 hour down the coast is Santa Cruz and the Boardwalk. If you're going to SJ the Winchester Mystery House is a favorite. Have a fun time!!

HEY CheerRacerMom! i just made reservations for Alcatraz and the Winchester House. Both tours are for the early afternoon.... I'm leaving Sun and Mon night open to go eat at Nicks or the 50's restaurant.
If you'd like to join me for Dinner, I'd love to have you. Just give me a call!!
Sorry I wasn't able to meet with you, I've been so busy. I'm glad the hotel worked out well for you. My husband and I stayed at the Half Moon Bay Lodge 22 years ago on our wedding night before we headed to SoCal the next day for our honeymoon. It is a great place!
Tomorrow night we are going to Nick's to celebrate my husband and daughter's birthdays. Did you get a chance to eat there? Gotta love the garlic bread!!
I just replied to you, CheerRacerMom, and then it disapeared...not sure where it went... Anyway, we ate at Nicks, and my son's dinner was fabulous........my prime rib was too tough..so don't order that. The Garlic bread was to "die for"...... The best part was watching the sun set in the Ocean......The sun was a big ol' round orange ball in the sky...we watched it until the sun sank into the ocean. I expected the water to "sizzzle" like you see in cartoons.............
The sunset was absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!! it was surreal!!!!!
