I think much of the same and then a few surprises in between. Seems like every year you have the same names come up and every once in awhile someone who is not in it normally surprises you with a great team and performance.

I agree cheerparent! I think that the same names show up and they never dissapoint. I love seeing new teams for the first time. Any new gyms opening up this season?
there are a few that have moved like 720 do not know if they are keeping that name or changing it will be interesting for sure I like to see teams come out like AP senior 2 this year surprised alot of people was happy for them at cheerfest its what cheer is all about.
I thought 720 closed down, I hadn't heard it moved. It would be great if the teams stayed together, their routines were entertaining. I really enjoyed watching them, they definitely gave other gyms tough competition.
ALL STAR I know OC, Reign and possibly Magic are done with tryouts. Pacific Athletics I think are this week.
HIGH SCHOOL Mission Viejo, Trabuco and Capo? are possibly done. Most others, like Aliso Viejo and Tesoro aren't having theirs till next month.....

at our gym the tryout fee is $40 for returners and $70 for new members. thats for 2 two-hour clinics / tryouts and includes a tryout shirt. we just finished the 2nd week of tryouts and the coaches are supposed to call us & post the results on the website by tonight. practices start this week ! i know some gyms dont organize the teams that fast .. some gyms group ppl by age & ability level and they practice in those groups through the summer and then the coaches split up teams later on when ppl have had a chance to get the skills they need for a certain level.
and we dont pay tuition till the 15th of the month. some gyms have you pay gym registration fees and stuff at tryouts but it still shouldnt be a whole lot of money at tryouts
I think most gyms have gone to doing it this way (having a general practice session based on age or some other random criteria and then naming teams mid-summer). It makes sense because a lot of kids acquire skills over the summer that may cause them to end up on a higher level team than they originally would have been placed on based on their skill level at tryouts. It really benefits the kids who work hard over the summer to attain a higher skill level.
We've been at a gym where teams are set early and at a gym where they practice together. I think the really large gyms have the luxury of setting teams early based on current skill. However some gyms like to have kids work together, especially when there are alot of kids between levels. This is the same with new gyms still trying to build their programs and with gyms that actually don't have their own gym and rent floor space. It just makes more economic sense.
Personally, I liked it when they worked together. Even though my daughter was on the so called 'elite' team, it helped the less experienced kids raise their game and created a sense of commaderie (sp?) with everyone at the gym. As a parent you got to know more parents, so when comp time rolled around it didn't seem like teams were so segregated.
Some Gyms do it differently. Some put you on a team based on the skill level you are at but may chnage you up or down depending on how you progess or regress. But for the most part you are the team they put you on because thats where you are at during tryouts. Your not trying to make the Gym your trying out to find out what level and team your going to be on. Also I had heard 720 closed its doors but alot of the members went alittle north to open a new one.
At AP we are placed on teams at the beginning of the year (the teams were up on sunday, try-outs were saturday). After summer some girls move up to higher level teams if they've gotten higher skills. As far as 720 closing, I was really excited to see a handfull of their girls at tryouts! Next year will be so fun
PS: thank you cheer parent for the nice comment about sr. 2 =]
I understand placing the girls on a team in the beginning right after tryouts then moving people up or down if they progress or regress. However, it's extremely difficult to move a child down but really easy to move someone up. No one likes the going down: the child is hurt, the parents are mad, yuck!! I am all for the girls working as a group and figuring out placement mid summer. Say the girl didn't have a good day on the day of the tryout or just a lucky one. By waiting through the summer you can get a good look at the childs work ethic, skills, attitude, etc.
Yes, I agree superstar. It's always tough move someone back down. You try and be as fair as possible. But realistically, someone always gets their feelings hurt. Most people can "see" what type of team/level they are placed on just by seeing the other peoples names and/or numbers.
